Update: My Model 15 is now in MY possesion:cool:.She is in pristine shape, and locks up tight.I will be giveng her a through cleaning;getting ready to go shoot. It will take a while to post photos, due to my work schedule, but i will post photos(i promise).
It is a 15-4 and was owned the California Department of Motor Vehicles at one time,as evidenced by a "DMV" stamp on the left side of the frame, below the cylinder.
In all a GREAT day.

Lots of fans (including yours truly) of the K-38/15 Combat Masterpiece on this forum. Anxious to see photos of yours :)

Nice find! Let me see, by the information you have provided the manufacturing date of your model 15 is...what, no serial number? :)

There is no exact manufacturing date, only a guess. There is an exact ship date when it left the vault. Join the S&WCA and ask Mr. jinks for a ship date or spring the money in Jan. 2016 for a letter. It is marked DMV, so there is provenance there. I would letter that gun.

Manufature dates range for non Performace Center Model 15 is 1957-1999.

The serial number will provide a generic date closer to the actual date of manufacture.

As gmbrokovic indicated nothing is set in stone and it would take a letter to document the actual day it left the factory.

The sweetest revolver I've ever owned was a 15-3 which is now the pride and joy of my son and his three boys. Amazing trigger, satin smooth.

The dash 4 is interesting because they were in production when S&W ceased the practice of pinning the barrel to the frame so can be found both pinned and unpinned, The factory also changed from a large right side TM to a small left side TM as well as the new "Alpha prefix" serial system at around the same time .

Your serial is probably from sometime around 1980-81 which is very close to the change over so could go either way...
my guess is it will have a large R side TM and have the barrel pin.
Post some pics when you get it.

To Engine49guy:The TM on the right side is large, the barrel is unpinned;and on the yoke itself there are these numbers :G18 & 34785,in addition to the S/N(98K4869) & Model # (15-4)
