Recently put this 27-2 on layaway, looked great at first sight in the terrible lighting in store, went back to get a couple shots and it looks totally different in another section of the store. Can see what looks like rust spots, but then again, kinda like some kind of stains. it is pretty dirty. Anyway, the serial # is different than I first thought, N199xxx, which is maybe mid 70's? Price out the door is less than $500. So what i am asking, is that a good price for one in this condition? Any thoughts are welcome. Thanks.

It has a few warts on the left side, but the money sounds like a good deal, I think.
Maybe another $35 for some gunshow factory wood grips, and you are styling. :)

That rust will come off and probably leave some spots similar to what's below it on the barrel. A little oil and bronze wool works good and safely.

Looks decent... but that barrel is interesting. With it having an "lazy ampersand" barrel marking, that's usually not seen on a -2 version with an N prefix serial number, unless it is an early 27-2 and S&W had some of the older barrels to use up. The barrel also looks to be a 5", can you confirm?

The markings on the bottom right side of the frame looks to have the regular "&" ampersand style, which usually matches the style on the barrel.

If it has been re-barreled, along with the condition... you might be able to negotiate a lower price.

it was said to be a 5' barrel, yes. it also had this 31x21 stamped over some other numbers ( pic ), so maybe something is up? I knew nothing about these guns till I saw this one and checked it out before layaway. I figured $450 was a good price so i grabbed it. I just noticed... both sides of the barrel have a different marking, the ampersand, is a different style on either side. WTH? is that normal?

Not sure if you have the gun yet but in my opinion it's been re blued. Look at the logo on the side plate, it looks buffed a bit to much to me and appears to have no raised metal at the edges of the roll mark. It also appears to have had the side plate screws flattened in the process. Always hard to tell in photos but the polish and color of the gun do not look right to me. The frame edges along side the hammer appear to be rounded also. Fair price for a shooter I guess but for not much more you can probably find a nicer one. Just my opinion, not meant to offend.

Is it a reputable place? Could have switched guns on you
if you didn't write down sn#?

it IS a pawn shop, a national chain, but I have bought four or five guns from there over the last two years. never had an issue, and have gotten to know the guy I deal with fairly well, and I trust him. Plus the first thing I did was write the ser. # down so i could find some info on it. I thought the first # was a 7 the first time, but like I said the lighting in there is terrible. I think that also contributed to the crappy pictures, along with my crappy cell phone camera skills. I have a couple more photos, but didn't want to go crazy, lol

No offense taken Mr. Brown, that's why I came here. I know most everybody here knows more about them than I do. The 1st S&W i bought ( from the same place ) is a Model 645, so i know virtually nothing about S&W, and even less about their revolvers. I do know I want more of them though! :)

It's a shooter grade and that is a decent price if it's a shooter grade 5 inch 27-2. I sold a collector grade 27-2 5 inch for twice that much earlier this year.

Well, all I have are shooters, I don't have a safe, so that is good for me, LOL. After seeing this gun and others on this site, I would like to find a really, really nice one someday. I think they look amazing in excellent shape. Maybe i can get this one looking acceptable, at least.

I'm not sure if the revolver has been refinished or not, but as Mr. Brown stated something is off with the finish. I would be more worried about getting the rust removed and a deep cleaning. As for grips perhaps you could have Keith Brown, one of the country's leading experts custom make a set for you.

Yet for less than $500.00 you got a good deal on a shooter grade revolver.

$500 for a shooter grade gun is a good price, especially for a 5 inch in my opinion. If it they had priced it at the $800-$1000 range a collectors piece would bring, then I would be excited. I'd shoot it and enjoy it, it you want pristine, send it back and have it factory refinished, you'll have a beautiful gun for $725 you'd have in it. JMO.

It looks like a 5", lots of folks looking for this one. I think you got a very good buy. I gave about that much last year for a 90+% 27-2 3.5" shooter grade last year.

I went by a couple of LGS' last week, there were not any SW revolvers in that range.

Go shoot it and enjoy it. Also not fair to apply a smirk when you tell folks you have a 5" 27-2.... :-)

Don't have any remorse about buying that 27. You will really enjoy it and for the price your money is safe. Great shooter and not exactly common.

Yes, those other numbers are normal. You'll find various other numbers/letters/markings, on the frame under the grips. They are assembly/fitter marks to keep track of things during the manufacturing/finishing process.

You did ok... that 5" barrel is not that common, and many people including myself, consider them special enough to pay a premium for. I think a 5" barrel N-Frame is a prefect match, I only have 2 of them... if someone offered to exchange 5" barreled versions of the N-Frames I have in my safe... I would have it open so fast it would make your head spin.

That looks to be a good solid shooter with mostly cosmetic issues not really worth the expense to refinish the gun.

But you need to address the rusting, it doesn't look to be anything beyond surface rust. For guns I've bought like that, I take the grips off and drown it in WD-40 (Kroil is good too), then let it marinate for at least a few hours to soften it up (sometimes I let it set overnight).

Then I use the edge of a real copper penny (made before 1963) and use it to "work" the softened rust off with it, like a scrapper. The soft copper will wear and leave smear marks, but those clean right off with a bore cleaner like Hoppes #9.

What you'll end up with is a decent looking surface, wipe off all of the WD-40 and then oil with a good rust preventive oil.

Now go shoot it... and enjoy.
