I don't think its as common as the 1 7/8 barrel but definitely not rare. Got a couple around here I like them, Bill

They are nice to shoot, more muzzle weight and sight radius than the "snubby" version. I think buy if price good :) .

Had one and one of the stainless version. Exceptional small .38's, ideal for defense or field, if you don't need a larger gun.

Veocity is about 75 FPS over a snub, and you get a longer extractor rod and less recoil.

The guns are quite a bit easier to shoot well than snubs.

I have a square butt 36-1. Great shooting gun. Much easier for me to shoot well than my 2" 36.

If it's cheap enough, get it as a shooter if you want one.

Just picked up a 36-1 round butt LNIB a few weeks ago. Nice double action trigger. Shoots to POA. Even +P stuff is pleasant to shoot in this platform. I've put a set of Crimson Trace LG 305s on it. Bought a couple boxes of Buffalo Bore standard pressure 158 LSWHPs for the gun. It's a B-day present for the wife. (Looks kinda like a model 10 HB someone left in the dryer too long). :)

I have a model 36 no dash flat latch that was issued to me when I was a detective. I wasn't the first guy to carry it though. Handy little thing. Had a bit of a bend in the ejector rod from whacking somebody over the ear with it in about 1979. Great shooter. I bought it when we changed to semis.

My dad has a pair of square butt 3-inchers he carried working undercover and plain clothes investigations in the early 70s. He bought them three-four years apart. They do shoot much better than the snubbie versions. I have a 3-inch 60 of the same profile that, though its more of a safe queen at the moment, I will not part with it. That one came from the factory DA-only with a bobbed hammer.

The three inch J's are my favorite configuration. The full length extractor rod allows more reliable extraction. The longer barrel adds velocity as well as sight radius for better accuracy.

Bought a Nickle 3" HB in '76 to carry off duty. Much more comfortable tho shoot than 2" and just as concealable. Still have it, won't part with it!
