I am thinking about adding a smith and Wesson model 41 to my collection. I have heard a lot of pro's and cons about the quality of the 41 through its various stages, with the majority opinion being "the older, the better."
some opinions say buy the "pre A" guns, which begs the question: what happened to the "A" guns quality?
any 41 owners out there who would like to comment on this?
thanks.

I own three, from the early 60's to the mid 80's and have a current production 7" barrel on my '85 vintage 41. All mine shoot the same, and are well capable of shooting way better than I can. Other than the difference in barrel lengths and some features (cocking indicator) the finish is all that I've noticed with mine. The earlier guns have a far nicer finish applied than the later guns, and the current 41's have a dullish blue finish. If you are looking at a "A" prefix 41 I would give you a thumbs up. I have also read good and bad reviews on the forum about current production models, but if the quality of the current frames match the quality of my current production barrel there should be no problem.

I believe you would be Happy with a A series M41. Its the same with anything you buy no-a-days there's really good models and some bad. I strongely suspect the most are very Good in the 41 lineup.

I own a 1992 edition, and it shoots far better than I could ever hold.

The stocks are just a tad big for my hands, but other than that, it's an outstanding pistol.

I don't know which is better, the Model 41, or my Colt Match Target, 3rd Model. In my eyes those two are the pinnacle of the mass-produced .22 target pistol.

info appreciated

thanks to you all for your information. it helps a lot.

I'm sorry, I know this wasn't really your question, but just throwing this in. I currently own a 2007 production model 41, and outside of the duller matte finish, it shoots just as good as the older model 41's that I have owned in my lifetime.

Nothing wrong with the A series guns. The pre A series may have a deeper blue but this is common when comparing any gun from the 1950s/1960s to one from the 1970s. Function and accuracy are the same.

I own an A series model 41 but have shot several different Pre A series. I've never seen a problem with any of them. No difference in accuracy or function with the ammo they liked.

My 1973 A series is a work of art, shoots much better than i can, and has the EFS, too.
