MOTORCYCLE PURCHASE ADVICE NEEDED!!!!

well i rode a triumph tiger 1050... it was an upright bike with a metal tank that would hold a bag with magnets. one can get several accessories to fit it and the three cylinder has such a sweet sound, it's like music. it had 114 hp and because it was upright, it was comfortable all day long. triumph still has the name that is associated with "cool" and you don't have to pay the hd amount.

Why not an ex-Police bike? Most departments today lease them. They are dealer maintained , and once the lease is up , the dealers detail them up nice and sell them to the public.

I got this 1997 ex-Police RoadKing about a year ago for $5000.

Don't rule out a Victory...........

They are fantastic bikes.........I had one (06 Cory Ness Vegas Jackpot) and now have a 07 H-D Nighttrain.........The Victory is an animal and very little maintenance comparatively. The train is a sweet ride, but is getting a 103C.I. motor this winter. It needs more than the 96C.I. it has now after riding the Victory.

You'll find acceptance anywhere in this great country if you're
riding a Harley. That said, a V-twin from Honda will come close
to meeting all your desires. Looked a long time 'til I got my '83 Shadow.
Still, everybody loves a Harley!! Like everybody my age, that
bike sings its own song when it goes by.

Since you're not talking about long rides any Big Twin HD will suffice. Used HD's are dirt cheap now, I would say go to a dealer and sit on the different models. You'll know you found the right one when you sit on it because it will make your soul smile.

This has been making me smile for 30 years, when it feels right, you never get over it.

Okay, you kids are forcing me to visit the Harley dealer tomorrow. Photo of the Suzuki up in just a bit...

Be safe.

PS:

I do appreciate all the input and advice...thank you!

It's like S&W vs Charter Arms

Bought my first Harley in 1961 (panhead) & have owned about everything since to include K models, shovel heads, Sportsters, Matchless, Nortons and one Honda. Enjoyed every one of them but none like the Harleys. Bought my first new bike a couple years ago, a 2008 Dyna and I reckon it will outlast me. The old HD's had a lot of personality, they leaked, they were hard to start when they felt unloved but they made you feel like you were on top of the world. The Honda was the first bike I had that did'nt leak oil, started every time I wanted it to and was a total embarassment to be seen on. HD seems to have solved those leaking/starting problems if the last couple I've owned are any example.

They tell me Charter, Tarus, etc. make a good gun but all mine are S&W, Colt or Ruger and mostly old like me. American made, get it? Yeah I know, some of the look alikes are made in American too but the dollars I paid did not get converted to yen and sent somewhere else.

ALWAYS REMEMBER--(As an only child I can't say this is absolute, but RIDING ANYTHING BUT A HARLEY IS LIKE HAVING SEX WITH YOUR SISTER. IT'S ONLY GOING TO FEEL GOOD UNTIL SOMEONE YOU KNOW SEE'S YOU DOING IT!!

Whatever you decide, ride safe/shoot safe and if you're lucky, you'll live long and enjoy.

Thanks & KYHOOYA

(Oh yeah,no apolagies to anyone offended)

Bikes are like pants...try em on and see what fits. Unless you are part of a gang and looking to get patched, brand should not an issue.

Said the guy that is still riding his 1968 Sears Allstate-Puch 250cc two-stroker.....how's that runnin' Sip ??? Shoo :)

Okay, seriously now, I agree with the guys that say buy yourself a used Harley. Prices are very low at this time, there are some great buys out there. And you will ALWAYS and FOREVER be able to find replacement and service parts for your bike in your lifetime. You really have to see what the prices are on some import brands replacement parts. Need a needle valve for an old import ? Get ready to spend as much as I can buy a nice used Harley carb for. Need that one year only crankshaft for your 1997 Yamahondsuzukkasaki ??? Better sell a few nice 1911's. I'm not bashing imports, just saying it can get expensive in years to come to keep them up to snuff.
I bought myself a 2002 H-D Wide Glide. For a bike that originally sold for somewhere around $15,000, I'm happy that I got it for $6850. This bike rocks ! Feels just right. I can buy more chrome for a song if I so choose. Anyway, good luck with your decision. Oh yeah, I also agree with Sprefix, I'd check out Victory's also, they make a beautiful bike, Shoo

Get yourself a H-D Road King Classic...very reliable and very comfortable ride. I have a 2000 with over 110546 miles on it so far.

By the way I'm going out riding rite now...see you later.:)

+1 I have a 2005 Road king classic. Extremely comfortable, handles really well for a 700+ lb bike, and hey, its a Harley davidson.

Wow !!! You are putting some miles on that H-D ! When are you gonna hit 2 million miles ??? Shoo :)
P.S. Me thinks you forgot the decimal point ???

Lots of nice motorcycles out there, no doubt. And a Harley does have a certain mystique to them-no doubt about that either. But for pure riding pleasure and comfort it is pretty tough to beat a GoldWing. Never met a person who didn't like them after they rode for a couple of hundred miles.

I watch the Harley guys after 100 miles or so and they look like they have taken a beating. I watch the guys get off their GoldWing's after 100, and they did not want to stop to take a break.

One good thing. This is the right time of year to buy one.

I would wait until the week after X-Mas, but before the first of the year(tax time). And I would pick the nastiest weather day in that time frame. That is the day I would be looking for my best deal. Tom.

Here's the test ride...

Lotsa seat time today.

Having a bit of trouble with the gear sequence...and getting a smooth launch. No tach and huuuuuge torque leads (me) to problems.

Was on the Interstate for a bit...no problems keeping up with traffic on this big boy.

Be safe.

I have owned about a dozen motorcycles over the past 40 years. My current ride is the HD Dyna SuperGlide, which serves well for around town and on the road. Prior to that I owned a 1200 Sportster which was great for around town, but less than perfect for road trips.

My advice is to own a Harley Davidson product, if for no other reason than retained value from year to year. There are other good motorcycles on the market, but none retain their value like a Harley Davidson.

I am late to the party but will stand with the Harley owners.

I have had many Hondas, Yamahas and one BMW and my first Harley softail Deluxe in 2005. Love the Harley, the wife and I ride it around the state on short trips, 300 miles or less and enjoy it a great deal.

I am not a tall guy, so the Softails fit me better and if I had it to do over again I would go with the Softail Heritage, since it comes with all the goodies for about the same price as the other Softails.

Harleys are reliable, get good gas economy and have enough power for long range crusing. Take one for a test ride and see what you think.
