My 1076 shoots low

Like, waaayyyy low. At 20 ft I cover the bullseye with the sights and I am shooting 3-4" below. Good groups but even sights at 12 o'clock they are still mostly not on the black. Used 3 diff types of ammo and some variation but same result.

Shooting my Delta Elite same day same hold no probs.

Is this problem unique to my gun? Doesn't appear that the sights have been messed with.

Well, it's a little known fact, but when the FBI adopted the 1076, a lot of trans national gangsters were known to ride on shetland ponies. With this in mind, the guns were intended to shoot low, because...well, you know.

I've never shot my 1076 , but my 1006 shot low when I first got it . Thank God it had adjustable sights on it . The older I get , the more I appreciate them .

If that's the route you want to go , Fusion Firearms carries adjustables to fit the 1076 . I bought LPA's from them to fit my 4007TSW and my 4566TSW . I like my 845 & 945 adjustables better , but you take what you can get . Good Luck

No, no, no, no. That's not it at all. The 1076 is designed to shoot low for use in narco sub interdiction. You aim for what you see above the water line and the bullet makes holes in what you can't see below the water line. Make enough holes and the sub sinks. Narco sub problem solved. :D


I don't have any of S&W's 10 mm pistols, but I do have a 6946 that shot way low, too low for my tastes. The front sight was tall enough that I could and did file it down so that rounds appear to fall on the top of the front sight at 25 yards. I also ground the face of the sight flat and drilled a new hole and filled it with white, enamel paint to regain a front dot.

If they are standard factory loads it is probably not the ammunition. The usual remedies are to try shooting it off a solid rest and have someone else duplicate that it shoots low, then a sight height change may be in order.
 
It's probably the gun. For some reason a lot of new guns now days shoot low. I've had to replace or file the front sights on an FS92, Ruger CMD, Citadel 9MM, Kimber 1911. I want a gun to shoot about 1" high at 25 yards so I can see what I'm shooting at. The exception to this for me is a Bullseye Gun, it's to hit the X-ring at 25 or 50yds, has to shoot a little higher. Adjustable sights are great but I don't like them on a carry gun.

The 1076 is hardly new?
My 1066 shoots just fine too.

"Cover to kill" seems to be the mantra with sights these days. The M&P semis are definitely set up that way.

I agree!

I don't own a model 1076, but when I'm shooting fixed sight S&W 2nd and 3rd gens, by "blocking out" or "covering" the POA with the front sight, so that the white dot, which is below the top of the sight becomes the "center of the target", (if you get my drift), my shots seem to be more centered.

It seems unusual to me as I had always used the "six-o-clock" hold.

But covering the target works better on the fixed sights.

The adjustables I can set up as I please. :cool:

I love them "big eared" adjustables! :D

Have you measured the front sight on yours?

The standard front sight, per the S&W Parts Catalog, was .229" tall. That's what my 1076 has on the front. (My rear Novak was replaced with a LPA adjustable sight, #TPU10WE30.)

The catalog shows that a .245" front sight was optional.

If yours has the taller front sight that might be why yours is hitting low.

The majority of my 3rd Gens all hit bullseye with a 6 o'clock hold.

I have had a couple that shot low & I put a shorter front sight on to correct.

That is a great point. I measured the front and it seems like the .229" version. The rear is 0.288" from the top of the slide, the best I could measure with my caliper.

You gave me an idea though: I'll try a boresighter and see what it says. I don' t have one in 10mm

If none of this pans out and after some more time with the gun I think I will go with the adj rear sight
 
67ray, FWIW factory sights are ball park. The factory has no idea what ammo you'll be using, at what distance, whether you prefer a COM or 6'Oclock hold, your grip, trigger press, sight picture, personal eyesight, etc.

If I happen to get a fixed sight gun that shoots to my preferred POA/POI, Great! But I never expect it, and have drifted many fixed rear sights, and changed many front sights to get the POI I wanted. The reason I prefer adjustables. Like Bluedot37, I have used the LPA adjustables on some of my fixed sight 3rd. Gen guns. Problem solved.

I bought my 1076 with the LPA already installed & the previous owner included the "take-off" rear sight with it.

I never measured it or thought much about it until last night when I noticed I hadn't documented my 1076's sights in my firearms spreadsheet, for some reason.

The factory rears (#107970000) on these 10s, as well as the 45s, has the tallest(?) height of any of the 3rd Gens at .352"/.460" (top/overall).

My take-off is way shorter than that & casts doubt it was the actual original sight.
