My next project - 4566TSW makeover

Are you sir a machinist?

Nope... Just an old retired ship driver

BMCM did S&W send you those sideplates?

If so, thats very interesting as they have told more than one member here, recently, that the sideplates are unavailable. It would appear that was incorrect information. Regards 18DAI

Yup... from S&W... I fully expected the customer service rep to say not available when I read off the part number. But no! he said in stock! and I said put me down for 4. S&W is closed until the 13th except for LE emergencies but I suspect they'll be getting some calls that week :D

Cheers
Bill

Ok, we're all done making metal dust.
Here we are fresh from the blast cabinet and a bath.

I hit the flats again with 600 on the surface plate. I kinda like the shiny flats.
IMG_6569.jpg

Yup, I Like.
IMG_6566.jpg

Yay for matching build numbers.
IMG_6565.jpg

Front strap came out ok I guess:rolleyes:

A sequence of the top end going together:

This looks a lot better.

Uploading my pictures right now. Tools you buy from Brownells. Skills you acquire by playing with the tools. Buy a beat up junker... get some tools and see what you can do. Patients good sir... Updating shortly.

Cheers

Ok here comes the wrap-up....

First I need to get that stirrup off the old hammer so I can pin it to the shiny new bobbed hammer.
IMG_6576.jpg

New sear spring & pin goes in next.
IMG_6577.jpg

Like so.
IMG_6579.jpg

Install all the little bits in the frame. All the lockwork components are new. Trigger, hammer, drawbar, sear and springs were all replaced. New sideplate installed as well. Oops, forgot to install the mag catch.
IMG_6581.jpg

Magazine catch is in. New recoil spring and guide rod installed and liberally grease with TW25. Also greased up the lugs on the underside of the barrel and the slide rails.
IMG_6582.jpg

And... Presto.
IMG_6583-1.jpg

I'm pretty pleased with the results.

IMG_6589.jpg

Sort of a before & after alongside my other one.
IMG_6587.jpg

And lastly the rejected parts bin.
IMG_6591.jpg

Well I'm damn happy with the outcome. Feels like a brand new gun & the trigger is just wonderful. Can't wait to take her out for a test drive. In any event I'm calling this mission accomplished. I hope you all enjoyed the show. 'tis time for an adult beverage.

Cheers
Bill

very well done! you got me motivated to work on my beater 4566tsw that came from the same batch as yours. Im in need of a hammer and see you have the old one in your reject pile is there anyway i could buy it from you?

Well Done Bill. NICE work. I wish I had the same deft hand as you do. I too have 2/ea of the 4566. I detail stripepd them and clened the years of neglect from their insides.

I like the polished flats. It really sets the gun off nicely.

So, we're all waiting for the next project. What do you have in mind?

I've been checking in daily on your 2 projects and I have enjoyed them more than any other thread I've read on any gun forum. Trust me, that's a lot of reading.

Well I'm gonna tinker with a couple revolvers next. Nothing spectacular just installing bob'd hammer and tuning. Still looking for a forged stainless N frame hammer & a trigger one of 'em. I got the S&W bug bad... Got two 1911s in progress and no desire to mess with 'em at all. And.... There's a gun show in Jackson this coming weekend. Maybe I can trade this P.08 for something sexy. :D

Cheers

Bill,

Don't know if this'll help, but if you send a color-cased hammer & trigger to Armalloy and have them hard chrome 'em, you'll never be able to tell 'em from a Smith set.

Wow!! That is amazing! I'm glad I haven't been here for a while because I got to see the whole show from start to finish at one sitting.

Nice thing about steel and wood, if you've got skills (or enough money) you don't have too dig to far beneath a rough surface to find "new" again. I wish I had either BTW.

Thank you for such a great thread.

Hey Boats, where did you get the bobbed hammer? I called Smith and they said they were out of stock. Or was it you who bought the last one? hehehehe

Well this is nothing short of Outstanding. Well done Sir! I am envious of both the pistol and your skill.

If you haven't seen it.... My first endeavor is here still incomplete while waiting for the bits to come back melonited.
Check on it here. http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...re-way-beyond-dremel-now-4516-gets-meltd.html

Got it from Brownells and they show still in stock this morning.

Thank you good Sir, kind of you to say so.

I'm tinkering with this a little bit now and again in the evenings:

High cut the front strap by hand and 30lpi checkering.
IMG_6614.jpg

Gonna cut some 30lpi back here too.
IMG_6609.jpg

These came in for my Mod 19 snub
IMG_6615.jpg

Still need a hammer for an N frame. I'll be bobbing a hammer for my carry comp so I may leave the stock bits unmolested.

Cheers
