Need a Cylinder stop screw!!!!

I have an old I-frame S&W .32 Hand ejector serial number: 63990. It is a 5 screw with cylinder swinging out to the left. It is a six shot nickeled with pearl grips. On the left side of barrel is a bracket then "32 LONG CTG" then another bracket. Under the Crain on the frame is a number: 18323. Under the cylinder release lever is the "S with W in a circle" with TRADE stamped on top of circle and MARK on bottom of circle. on the bottom of the gun the number 63990 is stamped into the butt with the 6 on the barrel side of the gun butt.
On top of barrel is stamped:
"SMITH & WESSON SPRINGFIELD MASS USA"
"PATD APRIL.9.1889.MARCH.27.1894" "AUG.4.1896.DEC.22.1898.OCT.8.1901" "DEC.17.1901,SEPT.2.1902,JULY.7.1903"

The sights are fixed, blade front and groves rear with a pinched area just in front of hammer. Hammer and trigger are color case harded. Barren is pinned.

It is a .32 Hand Ejector model of 1903. With the serial number on the front grip strap it would be a .32 Regulation Police

I took it apart to give a good cleaning as cylinder turned very hard. Put it back together except the cylinder stop spring. Put the spring in, the plunger, and trying to put the screw in it went flying. Found the spring and plunger but no screw! We are talking on a clean concrete floor and a rolling magnet.

Where can I get a screw or can someone tell me the size, length, and type head. I then will go to McMaster-Carr to order one. I looked at Gun Parts and Jack First and it was no go for the screw!

I have no idea the thread size or where to get one, except maybe a WTB in the appropriate section.

I can tell you with anything spring loaded, a clear bag is your friend. Work inside one and if things go “sproing” the bag usually traps the flying pieces.

That does not help now. If there is a window in the room, look on the sill and the top piece or trim. Check corners and the floor in the opposite direction of where you thought it went flying.

A flashlight held parallel to and very close to the floor wil cast a big shadow when it hits the object.

You may go to Numrich, GunpartsCorp. They have schematics of various models and part numbers. You could then order one from them. They should have some, and any "I", "J" Frame one should work. I'm still looking for a spring and detente from a rear sight in my shop when changing ablade. That was 15+years ago.

I have found out that the screw thread is 6-48x1/8" Fillester Head. Have some coming that are 1/2" that I will put a nut on then put on the sander and wear it down to 1/8".

Great suggestion. I noticed that Ace had gun screws some time ago, but forgot. Even if they are out of stock they may order one for you if you're a good customer.
