Need a New TV

Check out Costco. They have a sale on TV's thru Fed 12th. While you're there, grab a $4.99 rotisserie chicken! :)

We bought a 55" Samsung Q6 series 4K UHD TV from them back in 2019, after our 1 year old LG gave up the ghost. The LG was less than a month out of warranty and we were told it wasn't worth repairing. I'll never buy another LG product again. The Samsung came with a 5 year warranty and was highly recommended. It links to our Wi-Fi and includes hundreds of free Samsung Plus channels. Picture and sound are excellent. The remote is mostly voice actuated, which has a definite learning curve.

We're pretty happy with the Samsung. The only down side is, it's haunted! It occasionally turns itself back on a few minutes after we shut it off.
Mine does the same thing, I found out don't shut it off using the cable remote, use the one that came with the TV.

I don't have cable and have never paid for programming. I found that if I use the voice command and say "off', it doesn't come back on. If I use the off button on the supplied remote, it occasionally does. Strange...

What, no Sonys? Does Sony even make TVs anymore? I haven't checked lately because my two Sony TVs are still providing great pictures at ages 10 and 15 years. And they even stay turned off when I turn them off. Amazing! When I look for my next TV, it will be a Sony. If they still make them.

I know bigger is better...

There is some well thought out science regarding TV size and placement, specific to the location.

Every smart TV usually has it's own proprietary operating system. I've had Vizio, LG, Roku, Samsung, and Sony. The smart features all are unique to the brand. I like the smart system on the new Sony best because it is Android, like my phone, and this allows a wider selection of Apps, which pull in huge numbers of free channels.

As for specific TVs, I get whatever Costco has for a price I find reasonable. Their warranty extension and "Concierge" service cuts right through the factory BS if you need help with electronics. Had an expensive TV remote go bad once, explained to the Concierge, listened on a quick conference call to the manufacturer CS, no argument, replacement unit shipped quickly.

They are still made, still well reviewed, and still a little more expensive than similar units made by others. My six-year-old 49" Bravia is doing just fine, apart from occasional glitches in the connection through the Cox cable box. There is never a problem pushing anything to the screen through a high-res Apple TV box. I think I may go OLED on a new TV sometime in the next couple of years. Old eyes need all the brightness, contrast and image tweaking capacity they can get.

One benefit of the Smart TVs is the ability to communicate with smartphones and iPads via Airplay. I don’t know about laptops. Lots of free movies are available on YouTube (and other sites) that you can view on your TV.

65 inch Vizio full array LED is the only TV in my house. It has an impressive picture, and it was dirt cheap on sale for under $500 last year. I don't like TV enough to pay for an OLED.

Edited to eliminate the darned typos....

Sony used to make the best…their Trinitron was the class of all televisions…but they’ve riding on their name for years. While some of their electronics may work well they’re troublesome. I would only anything with the Sony name as a last resort.

I have no intention of replacing my Plasma TV, but when the time comes Im going OLED. It comes closest to the picture quality I have now. To bad there are no non-smart TVs.

I thought so too but Samsung makes ones that are essentially just monitors. With a Roku stick or other streaming device of your choice you can have the functionality of a "smart" TV without worrying about it going obsolete in a few years.

We are still using the 60" Pioneer plasma screen that I bought in May 2007, the best you could get at the time and cost $4000. Only 720p but great colors, and extremely wide viewing angle (which is important to me - I like to be able to see it from the kitchen). We moved to a larger house in 2011 and so could use a bigger TV, but we'll probably keep going with this one until it dies.

Both of our TVs took a dump at about the same time. I don't need a smart TV, so I ended up getting 2 Samsungs, exact same model. They were maybe $5-600 apiece. I have the Dish provider; it's smart enough, it records, I'm happy I don't have to take a class at the Community College to re-learn my TV viewing.
Oh, pantannojack, there's a joint down over the hill from me in the Lawrenceville neighborhood, called Stinky's. Small joint but it has at least 10 TVs in the bar area...lots of sports! Friendly service. If ever in Pittsburgh, stop down there.

You do know you can make your TV Smart with a $40 Roku or similar.
The Smart feature on the Samsung I’m watching right down has failed.
Watching YouTube on a Roku right now.

When I bought my 50” Samsung plasma in 2009, it was a whale of a deal at the time, around $800. The store was getting out of the consumer electronics business, it was a floor display, and it had no box or instruction manual. In other words, they just wanted to dump it. I think the original price was close to $2K. It would have been difficult to find better picture quality and color then. I mourned for it after it died in 2019.

Are there any Dumb TVs made today? My old Samsung Plasma was dumb, but we had a Sony Blu-Ray player which provided all the Smart features. We still have it, in the event our Smart Vizio goes dumb.

Mine is a 43" Pioneer Elite, I think it is an older generation than yours. It is the pro-920hd. It still has a fantastic picture.
