Need a New TV

We’ve owned Samsung for the last decade at least. No problems. Currently have a 65” Samsung OLED. It’s amazing.

What software does Samsung use for its smarts? I think all of the glass is made by LG, the differences in the different brands is software and image processors. Hopefully android is significantly improved. My folks Sony LED is probably 6 or 7 years old but has updated to the latest available. Android on it is a steaming pile.

I remember the early days of flat screen TVs In the late 1990s. I believe the first one I saw locally was priced at about $8K. I don’t remember its size, but probably around 40”. Prices didn’t drop much until the mid-00s. We had a JVC 32” CRT set then (actually I still have it and use it at our other place) and I thought it was amazing when I bought it. It weighs a ton.

I have a theory that all TVs come from one gigantic Chinese factory, and are all the same but with different cosmetics and brand names on them.

I was at Sam's Club yesterday. They had a 75" Vizio on sale for just under a grand. These old eyes think that bigger is better!

I did some looking at product reviews. Vizio seems to get high ratings in every category and is generally the least expensive. I have no complaints about mine after nearly four years of use.

All this TV talk has me thinking about getting a 75 incher, but I probably won’t as long as my 55 inch Vizio is working.

I was in WM today, several different 75” 4K sets for less than $1K. I had not looked at them closely before. If I bought one, I am not sure where I could fit into my living room.

Earlier Vizios had issues with their power supplies and replacement parts were impossible to find. That seems to have been solved and I have a smaller Vizio that's been reliable for at least five years.

Of course the pace of improvements means that after five years a TV is obsolete. We have a 2015 Samsung on our living room wall. We're planning to put the house on the market and when we sell that TV is not going with us. It's just not worth the effort to pack it up and move it.

I did a little research on Vizio. Seems that at least the components are made in Taiwan, and TVs are assembled in Mexico. Details are sketchy. I haven’t checked the information on mine. That is not necessarily bad. I have some previous, but not very recent, experience with the Mexican Maquiladora industry, and can state the Mexican Maquila assembly workers are very good at that sort of thing, and their QC is excellent. But my experience involved assembly of optical instruments and automotive components, not electronics.

I'm not brand loyal on electronics these days, I usually buy whatever the best deal I see on the size I want at the time. I have had good luck with some cheap ones and terrible luck out of expensive ones... I took the motto of my late Father when dealing with weed-eaters. He would buy a decent one, not the cheapest junk but not the most expensive and we would chance it! If we got a year out of it then great, as soon as it started giving problems we would chunk it and go get another!

That being said I don't get to control the TV at my house anyway, between the wife and he programs, my 16 year old son and my 6 year old little girl I don't get to watch much. If I do get to watch anything I usually watch YouTube and watch educational videos or stuff like that, I seem to enjoy that much more than any current shows on and like others have said it's usually a bunch of stuff that has been on for 20-30 years anyway. TV programming sure has changed. Between all the providers we have Netflix-Amazon- huglu (whatever it's called) and probably 3-4 others I don't know how to operate the thing anyway. I usually hand the remote to the little girl and watch Disney cartoons!
I would definitely get a smart TV.
Good luck to you

Samsung or Sony. I have owned both for years. No problems. I am looking to upgrade to a larger screen for my man cave and when I buy it would be one of these two.

We bought a 42" plasma from GE at Sears (remember them?) back in 2009. it still runs constantly with a great 1040p image.
We've since bought LCD, or is it LED? anyway, great pictures all around on Roku and Blu-Ray CDs.

There seems to be a bit of a debate between QLED and OLED. I'm hoping to pick up a 65" Samsung in the next few weeks. I've had two Samsungs before and have been very happy with them.

The fundamental difference between QLED and OLED is that QLED has a back light that shines through a filter. An OLED does not have a backlight, the cells themselves produce the light. In that sense it is a lot closer in principle to a plasma TV. The OLED technology has been around for decades, but it was not cost effective to produce until now.

An LCD and LED are pretty much the same. The difference is an LCD is backlit by fluorescent tubes. LED uses white LEDs which allows for more precise control of the light. They are both a back light shining through a filter.
