Need help with serial number

S&W serial number 685876 number on the crank is 23 079. It appears to be chrome plated. 4" barrel no rear sight.

That serial number is certainly a pre-war something---perhaps an M&P (or one of the several other models within that serial number range). Why don't you start off with the caliber, and the sights (fixed or adjustable), and we can go from there.

You are asking a question like "I have this old car. What is it and how old?"
A clear picture or two and providing what information is stamped on the barrel and its serial number will often be adequate to identify and approximately date it.

Could be one of several models that share the serial # range your # is in. And your # could be from one of a couple of other serial # ranges, all of the above being for different revolver models.
