Looking at a new 637-1, it has no IL. LGS NIB $425.00, I currently do not own any J frames. Can anyone way in on this airweight? The barrel is marked 38 spl +p, any recommendations on a good self defense load for this piece. Thanks

There are a lot...

I use the Hornady Critical Defense 38 spl. It is 110 gr FTX.
1010 at the muzzle
940 at 50 yards
883 at 100 yards

There is a lot of great ammo out there today as from say 30 years ago! Another forum member suggested them. They work.

I'd recommend Speer 135gr Short-Barrel Gold Dot +P if you're OK with the recoil and Federal 125gr Nyclads for a lower recoil alternative.

However, the best self-defense round is the one you shoot best in that gun. If you get the gun, I'd suggest getting a box of each type of ammo you're interested in and shooting them to see what works best for you in terms of reliability, muzzle flash/blast, felt recoil, controllability, and practical accuracy. The one you shoot best should be the one you choose. If you shoot some or all of them equally well, pick the one you can get the easiest, whether that's in terms of cost or availability. The best wonder round won't do you any good if you can't hit your target with it.

As for the gun itself, as long as it's in good mechanical shape and you're satisfied with how it fits you I say go for it. I would suggest bringing a good light and magnifying glass and checking for cracks in the frame under the barrel/forcing cone area. This can happen in some airweight J-frames, usually from the barrel being overtorqued during installation at the factory.

I didn't know the 637 was currently being made in a No Lock version. It may be old stock or in like new condition but are you sure it is NIB? In any case, the price seems about right and it is probably a good deal.

Almost any J Frame is an excellent SD choice and +P will do the job w/good shot placement. These can be a challenge to shoot so practice often and try an array of grips or grip adapters to help.

I've carried a J Frame for well over 40 years in back up, off duty and now in retirement. They are capeable of amazing accuracy and if you take care of them, will probably outlast you.

The -2 has the IL. This gun sounds like new old stock. Heck of a deal in my book.

For ammo, I really try to stay with standard pressure ammo as I shoot it much better than +P in the Airweights. Some to consider:

Remington 110gr SJHP
Winchester 110gr Silvertip
Federal 125gr Nyclad
Federal 110gr Personal Defense (HS)
Federal 148gr Gold Medal wadcutter
Hornady 110gr FTX
Speer 125gr Gold Dot

Buffalo Bore offers many different standard pressure loads but, due to their high velocity, they have just as much recoil as most +P loads.

Try those and see which one shoots best in your gun.

OK, bought and brought it home today. It is new, must be "new old stock", the s/n is CDNXX15. Will get some pics on here as soon as wife or daughter can help me.......I'm a gun guy, not a tech guy!!

In the past I've used Speer GD 135+p but recently picked up some Buffalo Bore 158swc in +p & non-+p.
