I inherited a S&W Highway Patrolman .357ctg. Along with my dads stuff was a lot of ammunition. I tried the .357 magnum cartridges and the .38 specials in the cylinder, but they fell through the hole. The .44 fit just right. Could this be the proper cartridge? I cannot find anywhere on the internet that this gun will fire a .44. Can anyone help?

Years ago it was popular to take a M28 or M27 and have it re-barreled to.44 Special, since S&W had stopped making .44 Specials in 1966. This is probably one of them. I would have it checked by a gunsmith and then enjoy it. It will most likely be a fine, safe shooter.

Good answer. Welcome to the forum, Agiedad - I hope you'll consider posting a photo of your revolver, as it sounds interesting. Sorry for the loss of your father.

Thanks for your help. I'll have it checked. Since S&W has quit making .44 ammo, is it hard to find?

S&W didn't make the actual ammo,(I think)but they DID quit making the revolvers chambered in .44 Special in '66. You can find .44 Special relatively easily, and it's still a lot of fun to shoot.

Oh, and pics of your revolver, please!!
