New SW1911SC

Well, I'm just beside myself today. I picked up the SW1911SC at the gun shop, brought it home, took it apart to clean and oil and have been admiring it most of the day. This is a superb piece of S&W craftsmanship. The trigger is great, the frame to slide fit is second to none, checkering on front strap and MSH is great with no bite and feed ramp/chamber mouth polished to perfection. What more could you want. Oh, and the grips...what can I say...absolutely beautiful.

Wow! That is one beautiful pistol. I really like the way S&W has integrated their own unique styling yet it still retains the look of a traditional 1911. If it shoots anywhere as nicely as it looks, you will have a first rate keeper there.

I just got the same gun. I am not quite as thrilled as the original poster, but I do think it is a decent value. I like quite a lot about it, but the things I am not happy about are:

1. The thumb safety had sharp edges where sits againt the frame. After the first time engaging the safety, it scratched the frame. I have seen this on other examples of this gun.

2. The trigger is not that great, especially for a >$1k 1911. My trigger pull measured 5.75 lbs with a digital trigger scale. I also has significant creep.

3. The thumb safety engagement is stiff. It is positive, but takes quite a bit of force.

4. The thumb safety has sharp edges where your thumb contacts it. Not blood-drawing sharp, but rather crude compared to others. This is on both left and right levers.

5. The beaver tail safety is heavy and has noticeable resistance when first engaging.

6. It has a full length guide rod and a hollow recoil spring plug that is too sharp to press with your thumb. Unless I have a tight fitting match bushing (this gun does not), I do not like to have to use a tool to field strip a 1911.

7. Others have said that the slide fits tight without play. It does not. It is good, but nothing like a true custom built 1911. The barrel bushing fits loose as well, which is good for ease of field stripping, but it is not a match-grade gun (which is fine with me).

8. It has a MIM sear and probably some other parts. Maybe it's not an issue, but it may be to some people.

Again, these are the things that bug me about it, but I still like it. It cost significantly less than a Les Baer, Nighthawk, or Wilson, but it does not come close to their quality.

The things I do like are:

1. Great sights. They are Trijicon and very bright.
2. It shoots to its point of aim, something not common enough in new guns these days.
3. It functions and feeds without issues.
4. Light and bobbed frame great for concealed carry.

Before it becomes my standard carry gun, I am going to get a trigger job and replace the ambi-safety with a better strong-side-only safety. I already changed out the full length guide rod and plug to the original design.

I didn't find this on mine. There are no sharp edges nor has it after a dozen times operating up and down scratched the frame.

3. The thumb safety engagement is stiff. It is positive, but takes quite a bit of force.

I like it that way. You can hear and feel a distinct click when putting it on safety or off. There's no doubt when you move it that you're on/off safety.

4. The thumb safety has sharp edges where your thumb contacts it. Not blood-drawing sharp, but rather crude compared to others. This is on both left and right levers.

Again, no sharp edges on this example.

I don't care for ambidextrous safeties but that's the way it was designed so, I live with it. The right side of the safety, for lefties) isn't as large as I thought it would be as I had considered replacing the safety with a single one but after seeing it up close, I had a change of heart. It's not as wide as the left side so it's a no issue for me.

I have felt no sharp edges on the grip safety after numerous engagements nor has it scratched the frame. I'm very pleased with this pistol and hope to get to the range late next week to see how it shoots/functions.

I have had my two tone SC since march and love mine. I haven't had any problems with it and it's a great shooter.
The only two things that I have done to mine is that I replaced the rear site with a 10-8 and installed a set of VZ slim carbon fiber grips.
I also went with the flush Tripp mags for EDC.

I've had a similar problem. S&W had me send it back and they replaced the ejector.

I also had a problem with the last round in the magazine not chambering fully. It would chamber about 95%. S&W modified the barrel, adjusted slide to barrel fit, replaced pins and replaced extractor springs.

Don't know if any of this fixes the problems I had or not. I've been sick and just got it back yesterday. Probably will try it out next weekend.

I should note that I sent it in just before Thanksgiving and got it back yesterday. That is really fast turnaround!

All of my pistols at one time or another eject a round into my face.. however, the SC does seem to have a "wild" ejecting pattern

I had mine out today, shot 300 rounds had maybe 2 or 3 shells eject directly backward and hit me.

This thread had me "thinking" while shooting the SC, to see how the rounds eject. IN my case most are "high and backward" over my right shoulder.

What I suspect is happening, the shorter barrel, light frame are adding to the muzzle flip. ON a weak grip the rounds were coming backward at alower angle... not up high...

With that said, if the pistol is ejecting most rounds into the face, something is definitely wrong...

ON a side note, i HOPE they come out with a 9mm version... the only other 1911 type pistol that is comparable (in 9mm) is Wilson SpecOP 9... but its a 16 round mag, and New Jersey sucks (15 limit).

Totally manageable. I shot 2 of my 45's yesterday. My 3" and 4".. not much differance between the 2 and it was just plain fun..

Yep, it is a beauty and I'm glad you have not had any complaints. Still there may be legitimate issues with some guns as is true with any percent of any product. I like the 1911SC a lot - but do think they should work as advertised especially at the price. I've also found over they years that the best gun makers "make it right" so I fully believe that S&W will "get it right" and I'll be fully satisfied with the 1911SC. Personally, I'm not even upset about having to send it in and the turnaround was great. These things do happen.

Nice thing about these forums is a person can learn alot from other's experiences (good and bad).

Ejected brass has never hit me in the face or head. In fact, it has the opposite effect. Spent brass seems to eject around 2 o'clock and that causes it to hit the partition in the lane I'm in and bounces over the line where I can't retrieve my new Starline brass. I'll lose maybe 10-15 out of 50...real bummer.
