I just picked up a model 38-2, nickel finish, in good shape. Is it safe to fire limited amounts of plus P ammunition in this revolver?

I wouldn't. A friend of mine once had a nickel M-38 he fired some +Ps in which caused some flaking of the nickel on the frame.

I don't know about the -2, but I have 2 M38 no dash, and both have 30-60 rounds of +P through them.

I won't shoot them a lot with +P, but I have no problem with it now and again.

Mine are both blue, so I can't speak to the nickel flaking.

I would not worry about the nickle wearing any different from hot loads or normal loads. Just be careful what you use to clean it, shoot hot loads in it moderately. I always carry mine with the hot stuff but only shoot it a few times to make sure everything functions ok and to know where it shoots with the high pressure stuff. It will be fine, enjoy the new pistola!
