well, i got it mostly apart, i sure hope it goes back together easy (thanks youtube!)
it appears that all of the internals are in good to excellent shape. there was very light surface rust on a few of the internal surfaces, no pitting. yay! i have it soaking in an Acetic acid solution that i use to remove rust from old bicycle parts. probably let it sit for 48 hours, and see what it looks like.
overall, very happy with my purchase. did some checking, and i think i will have it refinished at some point. I'd like to have the only black 1006

Wow, that's cool. I hope it comes out as you want it. Great gun and a great find.
well, it cleaned up pretty well, more pitting than i was hoping for. i dropped the pistol off yesterday at my semi-local cerakote applicator GCS LLC. the plan is to use Lauer's Durafil to fill the pits, then apply a satin black coating to the pistol. i will post pics when that is finished. was quoted $225 and 6-8 weeks.

I'd replace the sights and all the springs just to be safe. Have the refinisher bead blast that baby before the other work.

New here as well, but this is the rebuild I did on my 1066. Polished the slide sides, barrel and guide rod, satin brushed the frame sides and decocker lever, left the bead blast all the way around the outside, did a trigger job, polished all and any internals that have any point of friction and did/going to go to a spurred hammer, but Numrich sent me the wrong one so now I'm waiting on it to come in to replace the bobbed hammer.

Looks like a fun project, I would of sent it back to S&W for a full rebuild. I would also change out the grips, sights and springs before shooting. Did you shoot it before dropping it off for coating? I would hate to see it coated and then have a problem that need serious work. Please post pics when you get it back and good luck, I love my 1006 & 1076, built like a tank. $300 was a no brainer....

trktwo, dang it.....you beat me to it. I was going to remind you to drift off those sights and clean under the dovetails. Probably sick looking under there, LOL. You had a great deal there, but now you're throwing too much money into a finish, IMHO.
I would get a bargain blast job done to the slide and frame, FIRST. Then, you will get a true handle on the pitting. Still think some judicious polishing, followed by a 2nd bead-blast, and you'd be fine.

Sights will be removed prior to refinish. Entire pistol will be detail stripped and bead blasted prior to refinish. I'm not very concerned about resale value on this one. GCS does very good work, and in the end i will still be under $550. I should be able to get that out of it if i decide to sell it. Numrich (S&W has tritium listed also, but I doubt i will go to that expense)has front and rear sights available, I may pick up a new set. i was able to put half a box of remington cheap ammo through it, no problems. Nice find. Love to see people bring them back to life with their own personal changes. I have a 6906 that I bought with very little use but carried a lot with wear. I had the frame cerakoted graphite black and I polished the slide and added new grips and sights. You'll love the cerakoted finish, it really makes a difference.
