Newly designed SW15-22.0

Hello everyone, new to this site, I just purchased a S&W 15-22 and was thinking about replacing the moe stock with a ctr stock, the paper work on the rifle really says nothing much about specs, like if it is mil or commercial, I took my moe off and it is not tapered but flat and then I measured the tube and it read 1.152 so I believe it is a mil spec or am I missing something else? I assumed it was a commercial spec product being a 22lr look alike little brother product! Any info helpful Thanks!

Now, back on topic:

How about if S&W equipped the PC model with a (stiffer) alloy upper and free floating forend (could just omit the existing forend cap) so it actually had a chance at better than mediocre accuracy?

Why? The 15-22 handguard is only held in place by the barrel nut so why is it not considered free float?

If you want an all metal 22 AR, why change the 15-22? Why not simply buy a 22 upper that already exists?

IMO, as is, the 15-22 fills an important niche in the AR type market. It provides a very cheap, lightweight AR styled rifle that accepts the vast majority of AR upgrades & additions. As is it is perfect for recreational shooting, AR training (especially when outfitted similar to your duty AR) and some competitive speed shooting. Sure seems the rifle has been very successful for S&W so why change what is working for the masses?

If I want accuracy I have other guns to go to...some 22 some not. If I want cheap fun I always go to my 15-22 & plink away.

I agree and shoot the NSSF (Ruger) Rimfire Challenge matches with a 15-22. I got the 15-22 (two of them actually) because it runs more reliably than the AR conversions or the 10-22.

BUT, I thought this was a "what if" kinda thread.

Seemed to me the PC version ought to offer more (performance) than it does and I suspect a stiffer upper rcvr/barrel assy would help. When the end cap of the forend puts pressure on the barrel, and all the ones I've looked at do, some more than others, it's not free floating.

Just musing. Look at what you can do with Rugers' 10-22. The availability of aftermarket stuff (upgrades) sure hasn't hurt its' popularity...

This whole idea of its not broken don't fix it is asinine to me.

Why design a different car? The model T worked just fine when it came out. Was pretty popular to boot. Lol

But you are not asking for someone to build something new & different. You are asking for Volkswagen to retool & build an existing BMW. All metal 22 ARs are already out there. From the discussions I've followed thru the years, the desire for a metal receiver is very limited. I wonder if someone can compare the sales figures of the 15-22 to all the metal AR uppers out there?
