Non-lethal weapons

2 hours in a vehicle with half a dozen boy scouts who went camping for a week without bathing. Oh, wait -- you said non-lethal.

Sure, there's pepper spray, tasers, canes, etc. But...my personal favorite?? A good old-fashioned sap or blackjack. There's nothing like 'em, in my opinion.

Oh, I know, I know...someone's going to say that they're illegal in some states. Well, by golly, they aren't in mine, so I've got a few hanging around. A quick little tap to heavy muscle areas or joints can slow your typical street bozo down pretty quick. A nice little tap to the jaw or back of the head (notice I said "nice little tap") can put him down for the count.

Also, somebody is bound to say that they can be lethal. Well, according to a couple of recent court cases, so can a taser.

Here's a picture of some that a gentleman on our forum (Disector) made. In my opinion, these are not only handy little weapons, but they are also works of art.

At least one other has pointed out that there really isn't anything that can be considered "non-lethal". The official terminology for "intermediate weapons" is "less-lethal". Thank the lawyers for that.

Now that we have terminology sorted out, the answer really depends upon where you live or plan to travel. States and localities all may have differing laws on what's considered "legal".

A whole slew of places forbid use of the various sprays (CN, CS, OC or Mace-all only about 50% effective on people who have amped up for aggression or have altered their body chemistry in various ways) as well as stun guns, TASERS, etc. That also doesn't count the deadly weapon category of knives (may vary by length or pattern), dirks, daggers, nun-chucks, throwing stars, brass knuckles, black jacks and the like.

The best choice has already been pointed out: your brain. Develop a highly tuned situational awareness of your area and the behaviors that cue possible threat (Good books: The Gift of Fear and Left of Bang). If threat is detected, speedily remove yourself from the scene. Something that may be of assistance if your detection is a bit off may be the gentleman's walking stick/cane. Seek folks who aren't dojo rats 30 years younger than you are for instruction on use. There was a thread on this some time back with a couple of good books linked.

What, no one else like a good set of brass knuckles any more? Or a good old wooden club? Ooh....a short handled shovel is another fine choice. Railyard guards used to use them on the hobos.

A good person to ask for hints and tips would be a bouncer at a rough bar or club. Another knowledgeable source is anyone involved in the business of collecting gambling debts and or loan sharking.

Why not use what self-important people use? The bouncer or bodyguards named Guido. It also has the added benefit of the prosecutor is likely to go after the bodyguard instead of you.

The CNN anchor woman used an ex-special forces man to handle her perp. :)

For a few years, my son worked as a bouncer in the club where he now tends bar. He was very effective even though he is 5'3", which many would say is too small for that work. He relied heavily on his interpersonal skills.

Its not a baseball bat, officer.
Its just a flashlight.

OC spray is a popular choice for non/less lethal weaponry. Personally, if I needed OC, I would get the Kimber Jet Protector which gives you two high velocity shots of OC. The impact from the Jet Protector stuns attackers and if you double tap them, it cannot be used against you in the case you lose retention of the device.

That looks like a wowzer, but who would have that on them when they needed it?

An inkpen in the eye socket is a pretty good non lethal deterrent.

Can't get more non lethal than a "Hello Kitty Pillow"

I'm worried that Qball is gonna inadvertently smother a bad guy because of his mistaken belief that the notorious Hello Kitty is not lethal....

(Qball, walking down the street im darkest Stocholm in the wee hours of a foggy night. The wind howls.. Suddenly, a BG jumps out in front of Q, and with a large machete demands, "Your money or your life, mister!" Qball, not wanting to kill the guy, but just discourage him nicely, whips his Hello Kitty out of his tactical, velcroed fanny back, and leaps forward, smothering the rapidly -- but too slowly -- backpedaling miscreant...)

"But Officer, I didn't think she was lethal!"

"Tell it to the judge, you vicious smotherer!"

Sad.

What is the best non-lethal weapon to use, that is legal for US citizens to own and carry.
Laughing gas?

It would appear that "best" and "non-lethal" don't quite go together in the same sentence, especially if you're going to try to squeeze "use" in, also. How about lethal weapons that are legal for US citizens to own and carry? Some of them work.

Kind of tough to conceal. Mexican carry would have limited appeal for me.
