Hello gentlemen,
I have been away for a while but I just had to revisit with some questions regarding a newly acquired NY-1 model 64 that I received from J&G.

On the crane it is of course marked NY-1, and 64. The curiosity arises in regards to the manufacture date. According to the SCSW it was produced in August of 1991. But the gun is marked 64 with no dash. If it was produced in 91 it should be some dash series shouldn't it? (Cant look up which one right now) Can anyone shed some light on this issue?

BTW, I received a VG condition NY-1 model 64. I would say it is on the lower end of VG cosmetically. It has a few sharp dings and scratches. On the other hand the action is butter smooth. Lock up is a little on the looser side but the rifling, chambers, and frame show little signs of being shot much. Truly and old work horse. I may bead blast the exterior to even things out a bit, but besides that I think I will just shoot it.

Thanks again everyone!

Ny-1

In 1991 NY-1's are 64-5

What are the first two letters of the serial number???

Hopefully it starts with a BF**####

i wouldn't mess with it until you know what you have. is it a shiney finish or matte?, are the NY-1 and side serial #'s etched or stamped?, is it 4" 3" or 2" barrel? round but or square? does it have it's serial # on the side of the frame under the cylinder or not? are the grips original,NYPDapproved pachmayers, or something else? the model 64 NY-1's evolved quite a bit during their run and some early ones are a lot less common. S&W has a policy of using up all parts that are laying around, i've heard that it is not uncommon for frames to be set aside for some run or other then if any are left they are later put into the mix and come out as having been produced out of sequence. yours is not so out of line and early NY-1's could've been cobbled together for testing. one of the nice things about collecting these is you can carry them and use them because for the most part they've been around the block a time or two anyway. the dao actions are regularly better than a lot of da/sa guns, i don't know if this is due to NYPD or S&W spending time on these, or maybe they're just well worn.
anyhow good luck with it.

Rich

went and looked at mine,
my earliest is a 3" round butt 64-3 AWD9XXX and NY-1 is stamped in the crane but there is no side ser # and the gun is shiney (standard S&W stainless finish)
next is a 3" round butt 64-3 AYP3XXX NY-1 and the side ser# are stamped into the metal (rollmarked?) and this is a shiney gun.
my last 3" round butt is a 64-5 BFV4XXX it has the Matte finish and laser etched NY-1 & side ser#.

i have 2 2" 64-4's round butt BDT4XXX & BEK1XXX both are Matte and laser etched.

my 4" 64-5 is a square butt BFT3XXX it is Matte and laser etched.

i saw and went back too late to buy a 4" shiney round butt w/o a side ser# (yes i kick myself)
but i made it up to myself by buying a 2" M-60 NY-1 AWP5XXX w/ silouette stamp

so it does seem yours is a later model and should have the matte finish and the laser etched NY-1 and #on side the lack of dash# seems a mystery though i also read that some NY-1's were "made" NY-1's modified from standard M-64's into NYPD specs by NYPD armorers. does anyone know what ser # the NY-1's stopped at? according to an old RM vivas article they ran from 87 to 93

Ok, here are a little more specifics on what I have.

First of all, it is a 4" square butt. No serrations on the grip.

Firing pin on hammer. Smooth trigger. Full size cylinder release. (not the newer one) Frame lug is pressed in, not part of the frame.

It has a set of well worn Pachmayer finger groove grips on it.

In the crane is stamped NY-1 and mod. 64

The serial number is stamped on the butt, and it is also located on the port side of the gun under the cylinder. The serial under the cylinder looks different than the other stampings/engravings on the gun. It is nowhere as deep as the serial on the butt, or the .38 special markings on the barrel. The stamping also has a grey/satin texture to it. I am guessing it is laser etched.

Finish looks semi-polished. It isn't bead blasted matte and it isn't polished like my model 640. Some parts are polished from holster wear.

So, does that shed any light on the subject?

Thanks again.

Albert
