Bought two SW pistols. One SD40ve and another MP9c.
Both have odd 'pits' inside the slide, something that my old shield does NOT have. The pattern of pits is different however.

Are these normal?

Yes. Those are machining marks that assist in balancing the slide weight. A fine tuning if you will.

What I've read (on the Forum), is that they are code marks that indicate which milling machine the slide was milled on.

In either case, they are perfectly normal.

I'm in agreement that it's a dot code, and perfectly normal.

There isn't enough metal involved to have anything to do with "balancing" the slide.

I am going to get my drill press set up and start balancing my Berettas, Kahrs, Para Ordnance, Ruger, Makarov, and even a left over Kel TEC. I just wish I knew how to determine how the slides are out of balance and where I drill how many dimples to fix them.

Confirmed by SW support that those are to identify CNC machine that made the slide 'and other information' about the slide.

Not what S&W told me. They said it was to fine tune the lockup timing by removing small amounts of weight, without having to use different recoil spring assemblies.
