I just rediscovered this article from last May from The Atlantic.
Judging from the number of cat-related posts on The Lounge, this might be of some interest

As a veteran cat wrangler (see my sig-line) I am of the opinion that there is no such thing and a cat behavior expert. We may guess and we may speculate but we can never know.

I believe that cats live in several dimensions. They frequently flip from one, where they behave a certain way, to another with a completely different set of behaviors. And some cats have more dimensions than others. Also there seems to me no specific amount of time between changes. May change in a day or so or it may be weeks.

That seems to be how it works around here.

My daughter's first cat was really odd. She and I decided that he was from another planet and was down here on a recon mission. Every once in a while he'd freeze and his tail would go straight up.

We decided that was when he was sending reports back to the mother ship.

He was also great at hiding. The morning she and I were leaving to drive her to her new home in Texas, he disappeared. He was going with us, but for some reason he decided to hide.

We searched for 45 minutes, but couldn't find him. Finally, I caught some movement out of the corner of my eye. He had been on top of the refrigerator hiding behind some stuff my wife had stored.

Or maybe he had been beamed back for a briefing and that's where they landed him.

We'll never know.
