phone geeks or leo, how is this possible?

"Technology" gone mad. I suppose the cops will get it figured out sooner or later, but in the mean time, it does present some worries for you that you don't need. Hope things get resolved without any serious trouble for you.

If I were you, I would NOT do that voice test thing you proposed. Sounds unnecessarily risky to me. Sprefix is right. Let the cops figure out what is going on without your help. Remember: "No good deed ever goes unpunished."

I agree with not doing the voice test. The lady is already freaked out and wants it resolved as soon as possible and might just say "Yeah it's him!" just hoping it'll be all over.

People make mistakes all the time in lineups looking at someones face, much less recognizing a voice.

One of the these guys with experience with the app that mimics someone's number needs to find out what it's called so you can tell the investigator.

just goole caller id spoof app....there are several out there...but all I know about are programs you call into an 800 number.....input the number you want dialed and the number you want the caller id to show and it redials the call. But, as far as I know there is no way to spoof a caller name as the op stated. But, stuff changes all the time...:) Also, with 911 issues and stuff like that...the telco network and cable company records will record the call as coming in from the 800 #. The police, working with the sevice provider should be able to backtrack that easy enough.

Well after turning this all over all night long on maybe one or two hours sleep here I am again. It went roughly like this. First disbelief, than for awhile I thought it humorous. I think now I am mostly PO`ed.
Yes we do have cordless phones. Yes, I am aware all my guns could be taken along with my ccw. Yes I know the "incident" may never have happened as it`s legal for a cop to lie, and might be a tactic to find out other type information from some other complaint or incident.
Cops and I dont like coincidences. We had a unbelievable one yesterday. We seen a semi tipped over on the freeway near our house on the way to a resturant yesterday morning. My wife told her GF who owns the resturant something like "save us your paper tomorrow so we can read about it." GF replied, "would you belive my daughter said ours got swiped this morning"? I dont recall a statement like that in my lifetime! Then several hours later the cop comes over with the complaint!
After he left theresa calls GF and ask`s her if she was playing a joke on us! She wasnt. I am positive she wasnt.
Whats confuseing me is, "Why aint I in jail already?" This is a town about 25,000 population. I know if I was a one man village cop, got that same complaint, was showed "joe`s" number on the phone, joe would be in the hoosegow. I am also suspect of a lone uniformed patrolman checking this out instead of one or two plaincloths detectives.
I havent hurt a sole`s feelings that I know of in the almost seven years that we moved here to utah. Somehow I have a enemy out there!
I am not scared as I am innocent and a christian. I do reconise the possibility of a upcomeing arrest and all the hassel and money it might cost.
I even had bad thoughts of me being so open with myself on this and other sites with my storys. Many times over I have given much free info about myself that anyone with a computer anywhere in the world could be behind this! My wife has repeatedly gave me hell saying I give out too much info on these sites. Even though I spent my working years in security, she is by far more security conscious than me.
I have always been a super open type personality and frankly too trusting and fearless all my life. Now I think she`s right.
If something developes I will let you know. If you dont see any posts, well I guess you will know where I am at! I still kinda see some humor in it!

cable phone and internet as a bundled service ... which is not working as advertised .... I wonder if some jack wagon hasn't boosted your connection.
just out of curiosity ... do you have a Wireless network? that would be where I'd start if I were out to play.
from there I might be able to borrow your connection ... till ya pulled the plug on the wi fi router

Just because your number "supposedly" showed up on her's, don't they have to have a little bit more of some kind of proof or evidence to arrest you? Seems very slim to me. I would not say anything (other than being polite) and no way do any kind of test.

There was a great thread some time back on a UTube were they had a LEO and a Lawyer explain whtyyou never talk to the Police without representation. (nothing against out fellow LEOS's here)

Here it is:

"Don't Talk to the Police" by Professor James Duane

Sounds like someone's messing with you. No way that's a coincidence. As pointed out, it's super easy to get any number you want to show up on the caller ID. My friends use to do it to me all the time with a simple app on their phone. You're not under arrest because the police have no evidence. I'd stop talking. After a couple visits they're not fooling around and apparently suspect you and are looking for you to help them close the investigation.

I'm no lawyer, but I don't think the police can arrest someone based on a person's word alone. They either need to witness the crime themselves, or have evidence that you committed the crime.

Just got off the phone with one of my best bud`s who is a retired deputy and his advice is the same as the most of you. I guess I will be changing my earlier tactic`s and lawyer up if this go`s farther. That is the opposite to my past style that kept me out of trouble for 60 years. I remember as a boy my dad advised me, "If ya dont know what to say, just tell the truth!" Seems people say that dont work nowdays.

Thats how I was raised too ... learned real quick things have changed. Quite sad .... the old way made sense.
whats worse is while we can all theorize about the how and why and even get really close to how its done and why it might be done, the bottom line remains that our hands are tied and we cannot help you much past telling you to keep your head low and stay quiet. I might actually speak for all of us when I say it angers us to no end that your coming under fire like this

I am no Attorney either but have stayed in a Holiday Inn Express.

Did you make this phone call??. "No I did not" end of discussion. Since you already answered this, that would be all I would say period.

There is no proof you or anyone made a phone call or what was said. It's not as if it's recorded, so how can it be proved one way or another??

I would hope that the police have checked with the phone company to see if anyone actually called the lady making the allegation. Lots-O-nuts out there.

Last word was they were going to get a warrant to check the phone company`s records.
Got to tell this old war story. I was 16 and working 12 hour graveyard shifts in a cannery back home. One day a deputy showed up at the house and told my mother a polish neighbor of ours complained I was stealing vegtables out of his garden at night and selling them to the people that came fishing on the river by us.
Mom cracked up and told the deputys I was too lazy to pick our own!
Now this old man probley was the age I am now and about as big and fat as I am now. He also wore about 1/2 " thick coke bottle glass`s and was almost blind as a bat. He spoke broken english.
We had heard occasional shooting nights from his place about a 1/4 mile down the hill from us.
The local constable staked him out. A car came around a curve and lit up some shiny cans he had put up on fence posts around his garden to keep brids away from his garden. He opened up on the cans with a double barrel. Old charlie page the town constable bawled him out and came over and told my folks about it. My dad seen the old boy in the village store and tore him a new one! (Dad was from the generation where polish and germans were prejudiced against each other. The average people now days dont know much about that now, but it existed yet with those old timers.
A couple days after that I was in the village store and he came in. He reconised me and pointed towards heaven and jabbed the sky with his finger and said, He knoishs, yah, he knowishs!

Well, presumably you have done the right thing and told the truth when you said you didn't do it... so don't discount Dad's advice completely. I think so far you've done the right things, but I wouldn't "help" too much more. If the police come back out, you probably should decline to talk without a lawyer present.

There might be a bright side to all of this. The police might be conducting an investigation to catch the internet hacker/prank caller. This might be why all you have been asked thus far is if you made the call, because they knew you hadn't. Just don't get ticked, be polite, and if you feel the need decline to speak without representation. It's really disgusting that there is an overall sick sense of humor in this country. It's not funny anymore when folks are getting in hot water over a few laughs.

I would make certain that everyone is who they say they are-LEO's first-and then play it by the book-right down the line. Consider other motives-by unknown parties. Flapjack.

Well, I don't have any great advice for you, Feral, but I would think anyone looking at your life and your record would think it doesn't make any sense at all that you would call up someone out of the blue and threaten them like that.

Good luck to you, brother.

Thanks guys. I went this afternoon to the phone company to get our phone record. It isnt that easy. I have to fill out paperwork and send it to new york headquarters and wait something over 3 weeks. I been looking at the facts and concluded I been sweating over nothing. I did nothing and nothing can be proved. However I am very curious as to who is trying to get me in trouble, how and why. I probley never will get the answer. Thanks to all you for the encouragement and advice. I am willing to bet I will hear no more but if I do I will post about it. (When I get out).
