plunger is pooped

Yikes after two months of not getting to the range, I finally go there today.

I brought my MP340 and my 1911 for a a little warm-up exercise.

Make a long story short, the 1911 plunger tube pulled away from the frame and jammed the firearm by riding up on the thumb safety.


I know SW had a recall within a certain range of s/n's awhile back. Mine is out of that range of numbers.

I was able to un-jam the firearm and my dealer is sending it back to SW for repair.

The firearm only has approx. 350 to 400 rounds through it. I'm a little concerned to say the least. If it happens again it's going up for sale.

Plunger tubes are crimped to the frame. That's part of the original JMB design. They can come loose (and usually do in every brand that doesn't use a cast frame). S&W will make it right for you.

I just checked mine and it's loose on the scandium. Mine is also out of range of the recalled serial numbers.

The steel-framed one is tight.

I'm going to send it back for a quick crimp.

S&W service stands behind their products, so I have no worries.

I'll let you know how I made out.

This is a common occurrence with all 1911s (not just S&W) except Caspian frames that have the plunger tube cast as part of the frame. There are arguments on both sides as to whether that is a good idea. Anyway, it is a really easy fix. Most likely was not tightly staked at the factory and once it is, you should not have any other problems with it.
