Private Security Officer Asks For Your Permit How Do You Handle It

I just read where George Zimmerman's wife was removing items from their house because they are splitting up. He was taking video of this and she called 911 and said the magic words "he's got a gun". The "police supposedly ordered him to his knees at gun point and handcuffed him. They didn't find a gun. With so much hysteria over guns, I think I would not pull my gun at a guards' request. I would just leave. The act of removing a gun from concealment could be mis-interpreted by a bystander or even caught on security cameras. The police
might run your plate and visit your house, but, so what? Actually, its almost a no win situation. I would probably go home and call the police station and explain it.

Worked for Wackenhut in an office building. A man had been in and robbing employees, we were given a description and sketched image. Sure enough, guy matching description comes in and takes elevator. I follow, looking for him, take elevator down, he's on it. Ask who he's looking for, gives me a name not employed there. He leaves the building, but not before I got his license plate. Called police, they nabbed him shortly. I didn't have the right to detain him, thought about it hard, though. Would've loved to put my handcuffs on him, but legally woulda been in deep do-do. Later worked corp. security, no more power, a little more respect. Don't degrade any security, most of them have a brain. I did a stint as a police officer in the Northeast before my security career, made a lot more in the private sector.

I'm of the opinion that the guy's first and biggest mistake was telling his female friend (not wife or signifigant other) that he was carrying in the first place. Loose lips sink ships.

I see your point but to be fair the female may have been his SO it didn't say one way or the other in the report.

Must have been a younger guy hanging with a lady that couldn't keep her mouth shut drunk or sober.Hopefully he grows out of that and finds a woman who has self respect. You hang with big mouths drunk or sober and you gotta expect a problem sooner or later.Don't ask me how I know.

Here's what FL laws says about showing carry licenses:

"The licensee must carry the license, together with valid identification, at all times in which the licensee is in actual possession of a concealed weapon or firearm and must display both the license and proper identification upon demand by a law enforcement officer."

Note it does not include Mall Cops.

As usual with all these many answers I only read the opening question. Smoke, I did over 35 years of armed security guard work. However I worked for a large aircraft company defense plant. Sounds like where you work is probley a complex of private office and or stores etc, not public property. Well, it sounds like both the "buddy" and the guard did the sane, right thing the way things worked out. Now, the man with the gun could have as easly said no etc, and it would have went down hill from there.
Where I worked it was posted no firearms allowed at the entrances and the majority of the people I dealt with were employees and they already knew no guns were a condition of employment. Now there were also plenty of other people that also came and went that werent employees such as delivery trucks, consultants etc. On my job we had far more authority than say a mall cop, alarm companys etc. That was due to the goverment indirectly paying my wages through the company`s building their airplanes etc. Various goverment agencys set the rules where I worked. We searched at random cars and trucks entering the plants and sometimes we did find guns and other conterbrand.
I am guessing the guard you were talking about really didnt have the final authority were it to come to push or shove. However he did handle it the same as I probley would have.
I have been on the other side of it too like the guy with the gun. I handeld it the same as he did. Its quite a story and I have wrote of it several times before here.
Short version: A GF and I were downtown los angeles about 1972. She was driving my 64 coup deville. I was rideing passenger half asleep. Two guys were pulling out of a bar and T-boned us in the passenger door where I was sitting. They fled. As that was a old classic of mine and not my main ride I only had liability on it. I knew I was SOL if I didnt get the plate number. I told diane to catch up with them so I could get the plate #. That was just like turning angie dickinson loose on police woman! They ran to a paring building, knocked the arm off and her right behind them. She boxed them up on a dead end and they put it in reverse and kept banging us to get out! (I belive these boys were from south of the border with no paper work). Anyway she did back up as they kept ramming us and again they smoked out for the next level, spun out and diane delibertly rammed them in the side. I was a unwilling passenger through all this and now it was very far out of hand! My door wouldnt open from the original wreck and I bellered for her to get out and let me out. I had a s&w model 60 loose under the drivers seat and it had slid under her feet. I snatched it up getting out and went up to there car. They were immobile and locked themselves in. I did a stupid thing and smadhed my gun against the drivers window. It didnt break but he did come out. He says hey man, why de gwan? Can we not settle this weeve out gwans? The irony of that was too much for me and I said yeah, and deckted him. Now the passenger got out and started telling me how he would kill me if I didnt have that gun. I again did a stupid thing and gave diane the gun and took after the guy. He kept backing up and kicking. Then I heard diane say one more step and I will blow you away! I looked over and seen the fool I decked was on his feet and advancing on her!
I took the gun from diane, had the guys stand by the wall and sent her with my car for help. I made them stand about 15 feet from me and the next 5 to 15 minuets I listened to them getting their story together for the cops. They also told me they were going to hunt me down and kill me later. Finaly I seen two guys in plain cloths walking casualy like they were going to go right pass us. I figured them for cops or some type security and I was right. I called them over and noticed one had a gun stuck in his waste band. They acknowledged they were security of some sort. I had my hand on my gun in my pants pocket, told them what happened and said look, we are going to have a bunch of cops roll here anytime now and I have a gun in my pocket, I wany YOU to take it. Soon it looked like a police funneral, I belive I counted around at least 15 to 20 patrol cars before it was over. The first two guys put a shotgun on me and patted me down. By this time ane showed up in the back of one police car. I heard her tell the cops these guys were throwing stuff out the windows as she was chaseing them. Funny, I never seen that. They hooked up both guys but not me. We went to the central station and filled out paperwork. It helped me that there were warrants out for the driver. I didnt even ask what for. They took us to see the watchmaster. He had a little fun. He talked with the two cops, said throw him (me) in jail and take barney oldfield with him! (her). I knew what was comeing off but she looked worried. They got us in the back of the police car and gave me my gun and ammo! They drove us back to my wrecked cad. It would run but wasnt pretty. Were that to happen in later years I know they would have jaced the jail up, shove me under it and I would be getting out just about now! Demeaner on a guard job and also if your in trouble counts for a lot! Your guard and that guy did it right.

This is a second hand account from the report of an incident that occurred a few years back where I work.

Two people walking to a car in a parking garage at night. One (female) is, as reported, somewhat intoxicated the other (Male) doesn’t appear to be. They are arguing and the security guard approaches them and asks if everything’s OK. The female turns to the guard and tells him that her buddy has a gun.

The guard asked the buddy “Do you have a gun sir?’ The buddy responds in the affirmative and the guard asks if he has a permit. Again, the buddy replies yes.

The guard then states that the police have been notified, they’re on their way and would the buddy mind if the guard secured his weapon until the police arrive. I want to be perfectly clear that this was a request the guard did not demand the weapon.

The buddy turns his weapon over to the guard and the guard holds it until the police arrive.

To be clear the guard didn’t demand anything in this scenario he asked if the guy was armed, he asked if he could see the permit and he asked if he could secure the weapon until the police arrived. The buddy voluntarily complied W/ the guard’s requests

So what would you do if a private security guard asked to inspect your permit and secure you weapon? Would you comply? Would you wait for the police?

You would be surprised how many security officers are also vested with limited powers of arrest. Some security businesses have excellent rapport with local LEO and are granted POA.
Some "Security" personnel are special deputies, here and there. Many federal areas use armed security personnel, under contract.
As to the event you described, don't know the "Argument" wasn't more heated than described. Could be all manner of things left out of the story. I find it unlikely that a security officer would of asked to take custody of the BF's firearm.
I wouldn't want anyone involved manipulating a firearm under those circumstances.

Not to be a hard *** but i'd tell the security guard to go
pound sand.
I would leave if i felt the need to but no security guard is
going to be handed my weapon.

I've seen my share of wanna be Security Guards who over stepped their bounds and made themselves a caricature, but I've seen Sworn Personnel who were just as bad, School Principals etc. My point being, Security Guards get a lot of bashing and I don't get it, there are some bad apples in any profession, but there are a lot of good, honest guys in it to who are just trying to make a living and feed their families out there.

As I said in my prior post, I'm not taking guff off of a security guard, but by the same token when I was on the late night road patrol there were several places who's guards were top notch guys, I'd stop in to see them and have a cup of coffee with them, some of them were combat vets, they deserved and got respect. We had one officer's butt pulled out of the fire by a Security Guard who was getting off at 3am and saw him in trouble.

Life's hard, many people work hard just to get by, that effort deserves respect, as does taking care of your family.
