I noticed on GA that Robertson's Trading Post apparently has a number of M64 LE trade-ins. They list several engineering changes, noticeably -3s, -5s, -6s and -8s. All of the models listed have the 4 inch heavy barrel and are rated for +P ammo. They have round and square butt models available. Given the plethora of options, which engineeing change is most desirable.

Thanks to all who respond.

Blessings,
Hog

The no dash with the tapered barrel and the snub nosed 64s are the most desirable of that model.

Thanks Smith357. Given those are the most desirable of the M64s, of the available M64s that Robertson's has to offer, which variant is the best to have, if one at all?

I like the 64-5's. NY-1 variations. The 3" 64-3's are very nice too. Regards 18DAI

The 4" guns were made at various times with light and heavy barels.

If it existed (?) a 4" with the light barrel and round butt would be pretty interesting.

My 2" is a dash 2 that I think is pretty cool, and my 4" is a HB RB, one of the recent $209 cop trade-ins. Its in pieces right now undergoing a "fluff and buff"

Still looking for a 4" pencil barrel.

My answer would be the early 64-5's and previous (-4's, -3's, etc) because they are pre-lock and (mostly depending on eng. change) pre-MIM.

Anyway, that's what I picked given the option. I have a 64-5 4" HB LEO trade in.

Given the choice, for the same price I would opt for the -3 or 4 with forged parts, although I don't think there is anything wrong with MIM parts. Would probably avoid one with the lock since you can get one without.

You don't see the 4 inch standard barrel version for sale very often. It's either rare, highly coveted or some combination of the two. The 3" round butt, heavy barrel 64's are pretty desireable too.

The earlier the -dash number the better. I like the round butt with either of the 4" barrel types. The 3" round butt is a good, if not great CCW gun.

It depends, if I were going to carry it I would go for the earliest version, shortest barrel, round butt, if it was just for the range or HD I would go for the earliest version square butt. Square buts fit my hands better, YMMV.

The options are -3, -5, -6, -8 in 4" HB?

Decide for yourself. Not comprehensive but gives the highlights:
-1 (1982) HB introduced.
-3 (1977) Gas ring moved from yoke to cylinder.
1982 pinned barrel deleted.
-5 (1988)New yoke retention system/hammer nose bushing/floating hand.
1991-1997 Change Star Extractor/synthetic Grips/Square Butt Deleted/add MIM Trigger
-6 (1998) Change Frame Design. Add IL
-8 (2004) 2 Piece Barrel.

I have both a -5 (SB 4") and a -8 (RB 2"). They are both fine handguns with which I would (and do) trust my life.

I have a 64-3,-7 and a -8 and out of all of them I couldn't pick a favorite. They all do their intended job........are reliable, accurate and will last longer than I will.:)
