Do you remember the “pizza wars” as we called them? There were if I recall, three pizza shops about two blocks away from each other on the Concourse and one on 188th?
I think it came down to two slices and a drink for 15 cents. The good old days.

Yes there were"pizza wars". We usually went to the one on Kingsbridge Rd, about 1-1/2 blocks west of the Concourse. Their pizza was hot, fresh, sold by the slice. I do remember the price being 15¢ a slice and it came with a small Coke or 7-Up. When the"wars" got fierce, you could get two slices and the small Coke for a quarter... No sales tax in the late '50's. On 188th St corner of the Concourse, I remember a luncheonette called Pixie's for many years who used to buy bread and rolls daily from my father's bakery. I think there may have been a pizza place to the right of the Paradise theater, which was near 188 th.St., but it wasn't one that I went to. There were 2 others on the Concourse and Fordham, also like you mentioned. The Kingsbridge Rd one was where I usually went with my friends. My Mom was a baseball fan and we went fairly often to Yankee Stadium in the late '50's and 60's! [emoji461][emoji461][emoji461] Great memories.

Years ago, my mom took a few of mine and my sisters young children to Disneyworld. While they were waiting in a line, a man nearby overheard my mother's heavy Brooklyn accent and said, "Are y'all Yankees?"
Without missing a beat, my somewhat naïve mom responded "Oh no, we're Mets fans". My eldest daughter said the man's jaw dropped and he was left speechless.

The Northern Shoveler are a widespread dabbling duck species found not only in North America, but also in Europe, Asia, and Africa. A large duck with bold plumage patterns on a male, it's their unique spatulate bill that makes the species stand out. Northern Shovelers use that large flattened bill to strain water for small aquatic plants and animals, as the bill has comb-like structures along the edge for filtering. They are one of the most common duck species in South Dakota, breeding throughout the state and found in large numbers in migration as well.
Habitat:
Ponds, lakes, and marshes. In the summer breeding season in the state, they nest in upland habitats, usually short grass areas with shallow water nearby. During migration and in winter they will use a wider variety of habitats, including brackish and near coastal waters.

Yup, a shoveler. The name comes from the shape of its bill which is slightly wider at the end than it is nearer the head resulting in a slightly shovel shaped bill. That one is a drake. Hens are more drab in coloration as is the case with most birds.

All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey .... The lyrics from the Mama's and Papa's song came to mind today when a granddaughter sent a picture of the view from her Virgin Islands hotel, and I sent her back the view I had, through the car window, of a dreary Manhattan winter day.
Which would you prefer?

I don't like the heat, but I'd prefer the beautiful Virgin Islands beach scene to Manhattan for sure. If I had my absolute choice, I'd like snow capped mountain views with a stream or brook winding thru my property...All the leaves are brown and the sky is grey ....
