Random Object Photographs

Eons ago, when I was in Junior High (and Lincoln was still president?), it became a fad to nail taps to the heels of our shoes so they would click when we walked down the halls. Probably drove the teachers crazy! We also learned though, they were treacherous on ice. :D

When I was in high school, ROTC cadet officers wore bloused paratrooper boots as part of our uniforms, and we invariably equipped them taps on the heels. Some of us in the higher ranks were also authorized to write our own hall passes, so often one or more of us would walk down the otherwise deserted hallways, clicking away.

My Spanish teacher in high school is still alive, and she has always been invited to our class reunions. One of her favorite anecdotes is recalling how I and one or more of our fellow cadet officers would drive her nuts with the clicking noises walking down the halls while she was trying to teach!

At first I thought it might be along the Talimena drive but then I realized it must be in England since you're driving on the wrong side of the road. ;) :p

Hey!! I first heard that line in Russia. I asked an old time who had lived under communism how the system operated.... He said “Well, they pretended to pay us, and we pretended to work!!”.

Best Regards, Les

Les,

That's where I first heard it, too, actually. I was flying back from Moscow in the mid 90s, and the gentleman who was sitting in the seat next to me had been Brezhnev's official translator. If you look at this photo [ https://joestudwell.files.wordpress.com/2014/11/brezhnev-jill-st-john-1.jpg ] he's the guy standing behind Brezhnev's left shoulder. I asked him what life was like under the old Soviet regime, and his response was, "well, the government pretended to pay us, and we pretended to work." That really stuck. Around 2012 I developed an interest in American World War II propaganda posters, and found the one you see depicted here [ ]Each little error gives our enemies more time!: Don't forget we're at war! which I then digitally remixed to create this image. I really like it, and it seems to resonate with a lot of people regardless of nationality.

Yes it is. Very good.

Hahah! I taught at the University of Iowa in the early 1990s and thought I recognized that place. It had been turned into a pretty nice restaurant at the time I was there. I can remember sitting by the windows looking out over the Iowa River and watching the bald eagles nest and catch fish. Pretty cool.

Almost went there in 1964. Many of my friends and a few relatives graduated from there. Spent many Saturdays in Iowa City in the 50's when Evashevski was the coach. Here is my daughter (in the mid 80's) in front of a building you might recognize.
