Rastoff's Challenge III - Different Positions

Hmmm, there seems to be six holes in the upper left. Is it possible one went high when you were shooting support hand 5 yards?

In any case, nice shooting.

LOL....I'm going to shoot 2 of those boxes shortly.

Here's my target......the bottom left shows 4 holes but I shot 5....one bullet must have gone nearly exactly in another hole!!!

:)

Nice shooting Bob. My target went straight to the garbage can and I wadded it up so no one would see it. Don

Tried this one yesterday, once again using my trusty M&P40.

I used a post as a simulated barricade, and I shot both support hand stages at 7 yards because I am lazy and didn't feel like going out and moving the target.

As others have noted, this was surprisingly difficult - it apparently does't really take much to get one out of their "comfort zone". It really shows how even a slight variation of stance or grip can really affect your shooting.

Ok, my pride took a hit today.

Tried this with my 4516 today and boy could I use some practice. Shot this cold and used a table on it's end as a barricade.

The pistol used.

And here is the target.

Hope to try this again with one of my snubs to see if I can do better as well as with the 4516 again.

EDIT: the three holes to the right on the cardboard are from a previous trip.

Shorty 45 MK2: I can only hope my target will that good. :-) I'm gonna wait a few more days to try phase III, my pride can't take much more punishment.

Well, it aint purdy, but it's mine.....
Loaded 2 magazines and went to it.

I guess not too bad, considering this is the first tome I've shot either of my M&Ps with the support hand. 3rd shot on bottom right target was just off the paper, 4 o'clock. No way of confirming it, but my "old man recovery" technique from the kneeling position was spot on, though.:D
Maybe I'll try it tomorrow with my full size M&P9.

Your's on the 10th wasn't bad even with those three flyers.

I think you and me are going to have to make our own challenge with big targets. :D Granted on the plus side you can blame it on age, I'm in my mid twenties so I don't have any excuses. :o:p

Nice target. Thanks for posting the video too. It helps show a variation on the kneeling position.

Now, don't go getting lazy on us. Part of the challenge is doing it in order. You're a better shot than most of us. Shooting the first support hand at 5 yards is part of breaking up the "comfort zone" you mentioned.

You sure do shoot that M&P 40 well.

No, I'll stick with the regulation size targets. I won't have the instigator of this madness, (Rastoff) harassing me for making my own rules and targets. It makes me shoot better when I try and keep up with you guys.

Mixing it up for myself, I moved away from CCW guns. Here's the closest I have to a competition race gun: my M&P 9. It may not look like much, but I've put a lot of time and effort into it. Plus, it's the gun I train with the most and the one I'm most proficient with.

I was a little off when I switched to left hand, but I usually am.... :) I still managed two same hole shots at 7 yards which was pure luck.

Sheesh, why not just carry this one all the time?! Good shooting!

Lots of good shooting here, folks. You put this guy to shame. I'd be happy hitting the paper weak handed!

I second this thought. Unless you have a super light trigger, this should be your carry gun.

I'd like to be able to.

The trigger isn't too light to carry, but the size is an issue for me. I will carry it on weekend outings (or after work) in jacket weather, but for an all day thing it just isn't possible for me. I do a lot of climbing / crawling / sliding / stretching / bending / working on my back etc. that a large gun doesn't work for me on a daily basis. Also, printing is a no-no for 9 hours of the day.

Made it out to the range. I only had my MK III with me. I sighted it in at 25 yrds and shot the challenge. I will be trying this with other guns later.

OK, now for the good part. This weekend my wife bought my Dad a M&P PRO CORE 9mm w/ ported barrel. He put about 100 rds thru it and then shot the challenge. He is 84 yrs old and we regularly compete in local "outlaw" 2/3 gun.

The playing feild is leveled by the concept. It is intended to be shot with a gun you'd use for self-defense. Therefore...

Single Action(SA) guns, i.e. 1911 or M&P, will be shot single action. If they have a thumb safety, the safety must be engaged when at the ready and only removed when pointed in.

Double Action/Single Action(DA/SA), guns must take the first shot of each string DA and the other 4 SA.

Revolvers must take every shot DA. This is how the gun will be used on the street. So, for this exercise, it only makes sense to do it this way.
On Smith revolvers, a little bit before the hammer drops in DA, you will feel and hear a click. Pull till you get to the click, check sight alignment, complete the trigger press. With practice it becomes one smooth motion and increases your accuracy.

I've heard of this technique before. Alas, I don't own any S&W revolvers. I've tried to do this with other revolvers, but I've been unsuccessful. If you can do it, it is indeed a great technique. Just be sure not to "stage" the trigger. That will compromise accuracy.

That's fantastic. I love being out-shot by your dad.
