Despite owning numerous S&W semi-autos and revolvers over the years, I had always wanted a Model 41 target pistol, and decided last Fall to buy one.
Unable to find any in the state of Michigan, I expanded my search to Guns International, Used Guns For Sale Online, Antique Guns, Collectible Firearms, where I had a selection of almost 30 M41s, in all conditions and price ranges.
I selected one available at the Gun Library in the Thornton, CO, Cabela's.
They shipped the pistol to the local Cabela's (in Dundee, MI) where I had the opportunity to look at it but couldn't field strip it. I learned later that I was not offered any warranty, should there be defects in this used firearm.
Once purchased and home, I had difficulty field stripping it, and a neighbor, who is more knowledgeable in the workings of M41s, advised the pistol be shipped to S&W Performance Center for evaluation and possible repair.
FedEx tracking indicated the pistol arrived at the factory on Dec. 20, but they closed for the holidays, not to reopen until Jan. 8.
I was notified on Jan. 20 that the bolt was broken, and I authorized repair via VISA card. Apparently, a previous owner was shooting HV rimfire ammo through the pistol, and the steady diet caused the damage to the bolt.
I received notice from S&W this morning that FedEx received the packaged pistol and will deliver it to my door on Monday, Feb. 16.
By accounts of others on this blog, the turn-around time for the repair on my M41 was longer than usual, but the pistol is now fully-repaired, and I plan to spend the remainder of the day (after signing for the pistol) at the local indoor range getting acclimated to it.
I have plenty of standard velocity .22lr fodder and five magazines waiting for the pistol's return.
Yee-Hah!
