Saw This .44 At A LGS

Sorry to say I paid quite a bit more for mine even without a box.

I've noticed some "irregularities" in sales of collectible pieces lately, don't have enough data to conclude there's a trend but would be interested in others' thoughts. Examples:

pre-16s at under $3k, one at $2k
the 1950 Military 44 which is the subject here at $2k
98% pre 1950 Army 45 recently at $1500
4 inch 32 Reg. Pol. Target at $3500

These are prices reported ten years or so ago. On the other hand engraved guns by well known engravers seem to be continuing in upward price appreciation. Anomalies or a trend?

I have had a 5" one for fifty or more years. I had mine engraved by Tom Hartliep (spelling?). His brother Neil taught engraving in some NRA classes. I don't know if that hurt or helped the value. I did find out later how rare these were. It was my first Smith & Wesson 44 special I was able to find. Later I found a five inch 1950 Target to go with it, but never had it engraved.
