If it takes you more than 2 or 3 minutes to regrind an old screw driver to a nice new blade, then you are making too much work of it.
It's probably just me, but I just never cared for the interchangeable bit screwdriver tools anyway.
Fussing around fishing for the right size bit, on and off with the tips,, the little tray of organized sizes..
I've just always gotten along fine with a bench full of screwdrivers in front of me. Many just sticking out of tin cans. I can ID them by the different handles. Hardly any are the same style or color.
..and yes those older Phillips screw drivers get made into blade types all the time. They're good screwdrivers too. Just don't need the + style driver that's all.
A couple reside on the bench for the occasional recoil pad installed with them. But that's about it.
Any others that are good steel get made into straight blade types.
I actually had to use a Phillips last night to remove a poorly fitted Decelerator Pad (sp?) from an otherwise very nice condition Ithaca NID 28ga Skeet gun.
Why do people do these things.
The dry-wall screw-gun bits that are worn out and get tossed I take and grind to a blade tip as well.
They work perfectly in a Mill (or drill press) for undoing those really stuck gun screws. Very good steel as a rule, though some can be soft and cheap.
