What do you guys think? I am selling my CS9 and getting a shield. I have a M & P 9 and 9c. My LGS has a Shield 40 held for me. They sold out of the 9s and only have 2 .40s. I never really thought about a .40. I am interested in it to have a little more power. I am not sure if the recoil will be an issue but I dont think that it wll be. Should I wait for a 9mm? Opinions???

Personally I prefer the 9 - one more round, lower cost ammo for both practice and defense, lower recoil. Also, you already have 2 9s, so it's probably a good bet that you have 9mm ammo on hand...

If you want to buy a Shield 'cos you have 'Shield Fever' and don't want to wait for the 9mm to restock, then by all means, satisfy the urge.

If you want a little more firepower, buy a good rig (belt and holster) to carry your MP 9c comfortably. It will cost almost as much as a Shield. :)

Haven't hit the range yet but I know you can't go wrong either way ...

I got the 40 simply because (as far as I know) -- it's one of a kind. There are many small 9's -- and the 9mm is great with the ammo available in 2012.That being said , its a weapon designed to be concealed and when SHTF "comfort" will be the last of your concerns.

I can't think of any .40cal top notch gun that's thin like paper , small and perfect -- and can be concealed in pajamas. I can think of a few 9s though ...

My advice -- get the .40 and drop a 9 barrel in if you wish. Or just get the .40

Shot placement is always most important ...

But I personally don't want a pocket semi-auto for CCW in 9mm when there is a .40/.45 in the same model.

If the shield was only 9mm I would have gotten it regardless -- I haven't heard rave reviews for a gun like this ever.

I will post range results -- I'm sure I'll have an awesome report. People said the LCR .357 was too much to handle and I blasted full house .357 loads in tight groups with no problem.

Just get a shield !

The two things that I dont like about the 9c it the width and that it is issued and I rather not take it everywhere I go. Id rather lose my own gun....I am just intrigued by the .40. I can wait for a 9mm butto have more fire power and only have one round less seems like a good idea.

Rudy40.....You perfectly summed up my feelings on the matter.....I will let you know...

I have a Taurus 740 Slim and have been enjoying it for over a year with no failures whatsoever. I have been enjoying my new Shield in 9mm for 6 days now. I wanted it in 9mm since the Taurus fulfills my .40 needs.

Get the 40. I had no issue with snapping or recoil. Like one earlier post, I am hoping the 9mm barrel will fit and I'll have 2 weapons in one.

Get the 40. I have both the 9 and 40...more accurate with the 40. Here are my results at 7 yards.

Well I was convinced; I will pick up my .40 today! I just don't have the patience to wait on a 9. Plus my dealer said he will still leave me on top of the list for a 9 when it comes in and I can trade back if I so choose.

Can't go wrong with that :D

Just got my Shield .40 today and i love it. the recoil was alot less than i was expecting. personally i plan on getting the 9mm version too but also consider the .40 round is more effective for SD. Go for whatever floats your boat. i havent fired a 9mm version but im sure the recoil is a bit tamer

Ok so I am super pleased I went ahead and got the shield 40. As I was walking out of my LGS with it another gentleman was walking in to look at it and tried to offer me my money back right then. Anyway I shot 200 round thru it this morning and I really like it. Recoil was less than expected and less than my Glock 22 service pistol I've carried for 10 years now. I am still on waiting lists for a 9 and will most likely get it just because this pistol is so what I was looking for for my wife and I to daily carry. Awesome pistol! Now if I could just decide on a holster.

I put a deposit on mine, 9mm, can't pick it up for a couple of weeks.

Now I am second guessing my choice. Wondering if it would be better to go with the 40... my logic was to buy it in 9mm just to buy only one type of ammo... my other two handguns are 9mm.

Maybe I should stop reading these threads, lol :)

No. I would wait for the 9 to get back into stock. Use Federal HST 147 gr +P for your carry ammo. The rounds expand to within 1/10" of a 230 gt HST 45. They also penetrated 2 inches deeper than the 45. The 40 doesn't do this well in the same bullet per ATKs testing. By the way, you will be able to put 9 rounds of your nine on target the same time it takes to get off 3 rounds of 45, 4 0f 40. Test results by ATK engineers.

Dead or More Dead? $10 or $18?

I prefer the 9mm because I like to practice and $10 vs $18 per box of cheap Wal-Mart ammo helped convince me to go 9mm.

I also like my daughter and wife to target practice and a 40 in a sub compact is a turn off for the ladies in the home.

I have included two links for Gold Dot 9mm and 40 caliber.

I am not arguing which does more damage but after you look at the damage inflicted to ballistic gel by a 9mm Gold Dot 124grain +P I believe you will come away convinced modern defense ammo in 9mm is more than enough to get the job done.

A good 9mm defense ammo will make a person dead. A good defense ammo in 40 caliber will make the same person more dead. You choose dead or more dead.

Note: The following tests were done with slightly longer barrels than the Shield but I think we will get the idea what good ammo can do to a bad guy.

I emailed smith and wesson and they said that the 9mm with not work in the 40. Not sure why it does the the other m&p but that what the guy said.

These are all great replies. I was just looking at the .40 to try something different. I have my duty M & P 9mm and 9c and a Bodyguard 380 and a 5946. I shoot the M&P 9mm alot. The other I only shoot occasionally. I am not too worried about the cont of ammo as I wont shoot the Shield that much. I will put a few hundred rounds thru it and then shoot it here and there. I know that the new 9mm ammo is effective, but like I said the .40 is just a change for me.
