Really on the fence about this one. Have a new never been fired Ruger old Army with 7 inch barrel fixed sights and bright stainless. Part of me wants to sell it simply because after 15 years of owning it, it looks like I just ain't gonna get into black powder shooting. The other part of me says hang on to it, as it might be the only handgun that might be allowable in the future.
What does the brain trust say???

I would say that you have owned it long enough to be able to make an effort to use it... shoot it... get to know if Black Powder is something that you want to get into. After 15 years and your feeling that it's just not something of interest, then I would sell and use the money for your primary interests. You know that you would be able to buy a very nice Smith. Heck, you could buy another of your favorite Smith revolvers!

Well, here's the thing to consider (place on tinfoil hat if so desired....).
BP revolvers of the Ruger Old Army and M1858 Remington repros have never had 'paperwork' associated with them, i.e., no Form 4473. They're BP firearms, sold like vacuum cleaners.

You can obtain an aftermarket conversion cylinder for them, allowing you to shoot CAS - level .45 Colt rounds. I have two friends that have done that on a few, and they shoot great.
Just a consideration. Good luck!

You could probably sell it at a profit at today's prices. Buy something you want now before prices get even higher out there.

That's what I was just about to suggest. There are a variety of conversion cylinders available:

Ruger Old Army Cartridge Conversion | Ruger Conversion Cylinder
Howell Arms — Howell Arms Ruger Old Army Conversion Cylinder
Ruger Old Army Conversion - Conversion Cylinders - Hand Guns

I find it interesting that Kirst and Howell even offer a .45ACP conversion cylinder.

Shooting with a conversion cylinder is even slower that loading lead balls from the front. You have to take the conversion cylinder completely out of the revolver to reload it, and no extractor to help you. I'd trade my conversion cylinder for a second standard cylinder.

I rotate my gun stock on a regular basis..

Keeping the ones I enjoy, selling the others and get something new..

I would have sent that Ruger down the road long ago...

Sell it,the novelty of black powder cap and ball wears off fast lol
If they do become the only allowable handguns in the future, everybody will be making them

Caj', looking at the long run, I'd keep it and invest in a percussion cap tool and stock up on roll caps. As mentioned, the BATFE doesn't view BP arms as firearms, so no 4473.

Currently, we see where we stand with powder and primers being scarce. With a BP non-firearm, with the items mentioned above, you can make the caps and you can make black powder. It may be the last line of defense should buybacks and confiscation become the rule of the day.

At the moment, no one really knows what will happen after January 19th!
