smith told my they had stuff in the works but did not tell me what..they are being secretive i did my digging elsewhere

Couldn't you just measure the difference in length between the stock S&W Adjustable tube and the one you are installing? wouldn't that be the easiest way?

Cause if I remember correctly, the S&W tube is proprietary in length so we couldn't just use a spacer meant for a mil-spec carbine tube.

yes, if you are using their buffer and spring...
mine came in the kit with the stock.

Also i didnt understand that when they say "spacer" I didnt understand that to be an internal plug of sorts

as a temporary measure I just dropped 4 quarters down the tube to make up the difference... I am going to check the respective weights of my tow buffers and go from there

I found that I needed about .40" of spacers down the tube before replacing the spring and buffer to get my clearance up.

Your findings provides clarity to Smith & Wesson's comments in the AR15.com thread:

If you use the spacer we have created (Call the CS # I provided) , you can use a rifle length A2 receiver extension using "our buffer and spring"...

Any Rifle Length A2 stock will work as long as you get the spacer from Smith & Wesson and use the supplied buffer and spring (The buffer and spring that came with your M&P10).

Thus, we can use a full length rifle extension tube WITH the S&W provided buffer and spring that came OEM with our rifle as long as we use the (internal) spacer that they are now selling as a spare part.

I would like to see a photo of one of these spacers when someone gets one...
Now that I understand what is needed, I took some measurements:



space in rifle tube/rifle buffer combo is 4-13/16"
space in original config (M&P tube and buffer) is 4-9/16
to match that space a 1/4" spacer is required.

..but..
to use the M&P buffer in a rifle tube:
rifle tube is 9-11/16" deep
M&P buffer is 3-1/4" long for a space of 6-7/16
so to get the desired space:
(6-7/16) - (4-9/16) = 1-7/8" spacer

also not the difference in buffer weights

I came about this the long way around, but that is a small price to pay for understanding.

I'll gladly post pics of the S&W "spacer" when it comes in. I wouldn't be surprised if its simply a cylindrical shaped piece of UHMW plastic, at which point many of you can fabricate one yourselves.

You don't recall them giving you a part number do you? Because when I called the guy didn't have a clue. I'm going to try back and hope to get someone that does have a clue.

Called S&W again today and got a great customer service rep. I explained the part needed and after some looking said they were $8 + $6.50 S&H but said he'd send me one at no cost!

The part number for future reference is 432270000.

I think all you need is a mil-spec A2 receiver extension (tube) as well as the accessory S&W internal spacer, and you can then reuse the spring and buffer that came with your M&P10. This will allow you to mount any mil-spec fixed rifle stock.

I just rec'd the S&W spacer today. I'll take pics and will post later.

I also received the A2 tube and spacer today. I agree that the tube is a regular mil spec piece. The spacer is 1.990" long and 0.989" diameter - machined aluminum and anodized black. Has a hole running through the middle of it 0.247" diameter.

That is what I had suspected...
With the "highly" accurate (tape measure) measurements I took suggested to me a spacer of 1-7/8" long, so I see I wasn't too far off

Here's an image of the differences.

The top is the stock M&P 10 collapsible tube.
The new S&W spacer is at under the tape measure. You can see that clearly equates to the full size A2 extension so you can just use your factory spring and buffer. The third down is what S&W tried to sell me (and did) the first time I called and CS told me I needed "their tube too" which is BS. Because the bottom tube is just a plain old DPMS A2 extension from Midway and it's identical.

I finished the build today and after lubing back up the only thing I had issues with was the BCM charging handle. I still need to investigate what was binding up. Swapped it out with the factory one and all was good.
