Divorce cases are far more dangerous in the courtroom than are criminal cases and every judge will tell you that. Ditto the firearm nearby at all times! Even having retired I run into people on the street that I dealt with. A couple of them even said "Hi. I'm out!" Nice! That's why the ol' gat is always handy.

From the article...

Couture, who had represented the Mandeville woman during bankruptcy proceedings...

... she told the jury she meant only to scare Couture...

... she had <a loaded .410 and> four additional shotgun shells in her undergarments...

... Two hours before showing up at Couture's office, Page said, Currie was spotted parked in the woods outside the office of another attorney who had represented her for part of a 30-year legal dispute with the homeowners association...
"Strange" is an understatement.

I'm surprised her lawyer didn't plead temporary insanity. She looks like a sweet old lady and I suspect a 30 year legal dispute with a homeowners association and subsequent bankruptcy could push a lot of people to the breaking point.

This case has more than one victim, but I really feel bad for the officer who had to retrieve those "additional shells"!

It doesn't surprise me that some lawyers make their clients angry enough to kill them.
When I got my divorce it seems like things never quite turned out like the lawyer said it would. Even the bill was higher then they said it would be!

I'd be surprised if many Judges are not carrying either - for the same reason.

Harris Kenneth Wangelin - Wikipedia

One of a cadre of ED/MO Federal Judges who were at one point jointly called by the news media "a group of draconian federal judges from the bootheel [of Missouri]."

Judge Wangelin had one standing order to the US Marshals guarding his court room: "Boys, if I have to shoot 'em, you'll be pumping gas by the weekend . . . "

Maybe that was his plan to settle her bankruptcy, free room & board for life

You'd think an attorney would know better than to make a remark like that on the stand.

Fortunately our friend CajunLawyer serves only calm and balanced people in a highly professional and courteous manner, so he will never be at any risk.

24 years as a cop, a contested divorce, and a couple of business contract disputes have allowed me to see other lawyers engaging in far riskier behavior. I am not surprised that an otherwise sweet old lady would off her lawyer. I am surprised that she chose only a .410 to get the job done. Maybe that is all she could afford after 30 years of litigation. Maybe HOA's have a negative effect on human sanity over time (might be worth applying for a big government grant to study that for a few years; have to talk to my lawyer about that).

When I worked in mental health I worked with the sickest of the sick. When they stopped taking their meds it was a matter of time before they would end up in front of the judge. In mental health case the case was presented in the judges chambers and the was always, always a armed officer in chambers. When I left the business I started carrying because some of the clients that went to court had assaulted me, and I could not fight back or bring charges. Some of the clients held a grunge.
