Talk me into a 22a. Let's hear the positive!

I have a 22A and a 22/45. Both shoot very accurately with scopes. The only issue I have with the 22A is with a fully loaded magazine (10 rounds) I tend to get a stove pipe after the first round. Loading less than the max, everything functions smoothly.

I've had a 22S for many years. Reliable and accurate. Great pistol. Here's a pic at 50 yards with the 22S.

I have been so impressed with mine that I wonder why the 41 exists. Super accurate, feeds anything HV fine (doesn't like subsonics at all) now that I have 1000 rds or so through it. The dremel polish would probably accelerate that breakin time. Even at it's "worst" though, it wasn't all that bad.

I used flourescent green model paint for the front sight. If I had it to do over, I would definitely get the version with the Hiviz sight.

Oh, forgot to add, a buddy of mine bought a Ruger MkIII at the same time I got my 22A ... his cost A LOT more and doesn't shoot as well - groups are 1.5-2x bigger than the 22A.

If you don't mind me asking sir, how do you like that Tru Glo red dot?

Are they pricey, easy to install, reliable & accurate?

Thanks,
Lee

Lee,

I bought the 30 mm Tru Glo because it attaches directly to the slide's top rail. It has adjustable brightness for any lighting condition & accurate enough to suite my needs. The price, I think, was around $35-40.

tc, for what it's worth:

I am a huge fan of Ruger as well as Smith.

Having said that; the takedown and reassembly on the Rugers is ridiculous! The 22A almost field strips itself; that's another good point on buying this gun.

We have a real good, positive thread going here. I really appreciate the great input we're getting. Keep it coming guys!

Thanks to all,

Lee

Thanks!

How many rounds do you guys have through your 22a's?

Lee

I dont keep an accurate round count (not that obsessive/compulsive), but I'd estimate between 500 and 1000. Been shooting CCI mini-mags and the cheap bulk stuff with similar results at 7 to 25 yds.

I agree that the take-down is easy, and to watch out for the recoil rod, spring and spacer launching into the unknown. I field strip and clean after each range session as I do with all my firearms.

I've had a Ruger 22/45 for many years and many tens of thousands of rounds. Never been apart. Very reliable shooter.

I have the stainless model and have no problem with it. It is a good all around gun. If you like it, buy it. Wallacem in Ga

I don't own a 22a myself, but three guys I shoot with do own them; many of the guys in our club spend big bucks for fancier pistols, but those 22as do the job and like a Timex, they keep on ticking!

One buddy of mine has about 10,000 rounds thru his, practices twice a week and shoots an average of 270 on the NRA Bulls Eye course (using a red dot). We have guys w/ benellis, walthers & 41s that struggle to break 235.

The 22a can do the job.

I purchased a 22A last year for under $200 ($3.00 shipping); it is by far the most inexpensive .22 I own. It also is my favorite .22 handgun.

It has performed flawlessly. It is more accurate than I am. I am very, very satisfied with the 22A. I think I'll get a 22S too someday soon.

Now that reminds me of the Eveready Bunny (A.K.A., my sigma;))

You know, thinking about it, the comparison to a Sigma is quite accurate. Unfairly maligned because they're not quite as nice as their big brothers but a damn fine gun (especially when you consider the price).

You said tc!

My sigma is awesome; works like a champ every time! My girls shoot it all the time and have no problem pulling the 500 lb trigger (according to what I've read on the "magical" internet), and they hit the target!

And now, back to the American made S&W22A!:)

I want to put a new twist on this thread.
.........................
I'd like to hear from those who do like it. The gun will be used for short range target practice and some fun plinking..........
Lee

That's what I bought mine for. It does the job ok. pretty good (ie large and easier to see) sights for the older eyes. I bought a cheap (~$40) red dot sight and mounted it. Now I really do like it for shooting at the backyard stump target.

Not too complicated to clean, just follow the directions. Not extremely accurate, but ok for what it was designed for, which is your intended use.

I bought mine on sale one weekend when I was working far from the house and didn't have a 22 with me. Price was good, and it met my expectations.

22A and tru glo

Truglos are fool proof and I got mine at meijer in the discount isle for $15.00 and I bought 2 for that price and would have bought more if they had more.I,ve taken over 20 racoons with the tru glo and flash light and a real tree camo 22a.Not to be to graphic the flash light turns there eyes green in the dark and the tru glo on low puts a red dot between the green and well you know whats next.I ask my wife to aim the flash light at the trash cans and she didnt know till it was to late that she was a culpruit in a racoons dispatching. She was hot.Sorry for rambling.
22 hand guns are my favorite and there are so many to pick from. If you do get the 22a and dont like it you can still get your money out of it.

I keep hearing good things about those tru Glos.

You guys got me interested in one.

thanks,

Lee
