So... I have been pondering this for sometime.... I hope this is the proper sub, mods please move if not sorry...

If there was 1 revolver, of course S&W and modern you could take anywhere, and by that I mean (I'm from Fla) NY, CA, NJ, heck any where CONUS..... what would it be ???

I know there are lists of certain guns in certain states that are allowed or not I am just flat un fimilar....

Would it be the 940, the 640? The 686? The model 10? The 629?

The reason I ask is I always stay armed especially in todays climate and I may be traveling for some work across the country so I would like to prepare in someway or just get a general idea...

Thanks gents
Erik

Hmmm...

Tough one. Not sure I could narrow it down to just one.

But if I had to, I'd probably be inclined to go with a 642-1.

For one thing, I already have one. :p

But that also means I'm familiar with it, I can shoot it reasonably well, and comfortable with it as a carry gun. For several years it was my only carry gun.

It's also +P-rated, so that opens up some ammo versatility, standard pressure or +P. Current ammo availability might affect that, but I'm well-stocked on Speer 135gr SB-GDHP +P.

Most importantly, though, is that its size and weight lends itself to a variety of carry modes: IWB/AIWB, OWB, pocket, ankle, shoulder, etc. In fact, several years ago when I had to sell the bulk of my gun collection, that was the reason I kept my 642.

And, at least until the recent availability issues, they could be found pretty easily for not too much money if one needed a replacement, for whatever reason.

Just my opinion.

Man, been a while Since I've posted here. Personally, I would opt for a Snubnosed model 66,65,19, or 13. 2.5",2.75", or 3" wouldn't matter much.

Ideally it'd be equipped with a fixed rear sight and zeroed to a certain load, and have a bobbed hammer. If you restricted me to a modern production gun, I'd go with the model 19 carry comp as offered, with a D&L fixed rear sight, loaded with whatever hit to the sights.

The gun that I have traveled with is the model 360, 357 magnum. It's small enough to carry and is the lightest revolver I have ever handled. And it's hard to beat the 357. I have gone old school lately and have been carrying 158 grain, Winchester semi wad cutters. I feel comfortable that this load can handle just about anything.

Well maybe an added note... if i got called to NY or CA and had to jump on a plane from Florida to...what could I safely check weapon/ammo (in luggage) to where I wasent faced with opposition when arriving at said destination

My wife and I travel quite a bit in our motorhome. So I feel qualified to answer this question. The revolver that is almost always with me is my 640-1 loaded with the Speer .357 135 grain SBGD. I feel that as long as I'm careful it's a good companion.

If you're covered under LEOSA, you should be fine, so long as you follow TSA rules. Best to research the laws in each of those states with regard to LEOSA and how you should proceed.

If it had to be a S&W that I currently own, my #1 choice would be the 3" 686-6. I don't own a J-Frame, and my one and only K-frame is the 4" Model 10-8. My only revolver smaller than the 3" 686-6 is my 2.25" SP101, which I've traveled with both on airlines and by auto or motorcycle.

I'd pick a revolver because I know it's PC anywhere (semi-autos in certain areas could come under scrutiny due to magazine capacity for example). The revolver is just simple and easy to carry. In cooler seasons it would be the 3" 686-6 for sure, in hot weather the SP101.

If it was just one, I'd pick my 640-1 pro.

Taking a firearm through TSA isn't too big of a deal. You'll just need a good hard sided lockable case with TSA approved locks. I picked up a Boyt case at Bass Pro, but Harbor Freight has some that would work a lot cheaper. Ammo can be in same case, but just leave it in the original box. And you'll have to pay $25 each way and declare it at check in.

We went out to Las Vegas a couple of years ago and I wanted to try it just to see how big of a hassle it would be. I was pleasantly surprised how easy it actually was, but I had already mentally prepared myself for an ordeal.

We leave Ohio Winter and hide in Florida for 3-4months. I carry the same all that time as I do at home. 99% of the time I have 2 442s on me. Once in I while I change out one of them but not to often.

Well thats good to know...

I guess more over a personal choice, what is the 1 gun that is legal across the country?

My life does not take me to highly populated areas so I have no familiarity with laws in such places.
For an every day go anywhere it would be either my 66-1 2.5" or my 60-10. Will take care of any situation I run into afield or in town.
I have to admit my travel gun and around town gun is now Sig P365XL.
But it ain't a trail gun by any measure. So it came in 3rd.

Legal for who to do what?

There is no gun of any type that is legal for anyone to carry everywhere. Show up in DC with any type of handgun and if the authorities find out about it you will most likely end up in jail unless you're an FBI special agent or other federal law enforcement on duty.

You haven't told us enough to get a knowledgeable answer to your question. Are you federal law enforcement? Law enforcement of any kind? Planning on carrying the gun on your person or in your vehicle for self defense? What states do you hold a concealed carry permit from?

For the average Joe with a Florida carry permit, there are more than a few states where it will not be legal for you to carry any handgun of any type. For those state, if you are going to carry in violation of their laws, the type of gun you choose to carry will be the least of your concerns.
