The Devastation of Helene in North Carolina

Most government "bureaucrats" are risk averse and they believe that if they blindly follow policies and procedures they will be covered. Not necessarily their fault because its been beaten into their heads.

When teaching public policy analysis I talked about agencies being "process bound." Thinking outside the box is discouraged.
I think this is true of most large organizations.

I was watching the news at 12 today and they were interviewing a man in Banner Elk, NC. He said that he was told it would be 3 months before they would get their electricity back. He said winter was coming and was wondering just what they all were going to do.

I'm in Upper East TN right at the NC line, we've seen all the tornados we ever want to see.... the destruction around us is pretty devastating...:(

Seriously?! That whole free speech thing is scary, huh?

We pray for all the US citizens in areas devastated by Helene.

Free speech, as per our First Amendment, doesn't scare me in the slightest...but there are a lot of people in this country these days who are terrified of being fact-checked. They see the First Amendment not as a shield against being punished for telling the truth or stating an opinion, but as a license knowingly to spread lies and propaganda.

I will never advocate or support Congress abridging the First Amendment. But this is a private website, with rules set by the administrators and enforced by the moderators...hence my [partially] tongue-in-cheek suggestion.

...That's the funniest thing you've ever said on this forum!

Really? Wow...I thought I've been a lot wittier in some other posts.

But seriously...clever memes and cynical comments are no substitute for facts and evidence. Do you have any evidence that members of the "legacy media" are not professional journalists, or that they are not committed to gathering information and reporting facts?

I realize that some crackpots in this country chant "fake news" any time they read something they don't like in the newspaper, and I'm also aware of the bias on most editorial pages. But for straight-up factual reporting, the "legacy media" -- especially newspapers like the Washington Post and New York Times, and wire services like the Associated Press -- are still a better source of accurate information than an online blogger with an ideological axe to grind.

Yes, there's plenty of evidence, with numerous stories that were pushed by the media, especially over the last 4-8 years, that were proven to be completely false. It's clear enough to anyone that isn't blind. But being that subject is entirely political, the discussion is not appropriate for this forum.

And free speech is free speech. We're not talking about "fire" in a theatre here. We're talking about political speech, which is the MOST sacrosanct and protected speech under the constitution.

That's a lower bar than the limbo rock.:D

I grant you that the First Amendment is an absolute, except for a few very narrow examples. Having said that...

Does your notion of "free speech" include a deliberate lie? Is it okay to mislead people and tell them something that the speaker knows is not true? I'm not talking about a difference of opinion here...I'm talking about the equivalent of telling people that 2+2=5, or that Halloween falls on January 1...something that is absolutely, demonstrably false.

Think about how "free speech" could be used to attack gun owners, to go after our rights...is that really the kind of atmosphere you want?

Whom do you consider to an exemplar of "free speech"...Thomas Jefferson or Joseph Goebbels?

In general and not specific to this Hurricane reporting, people form opinions often based on what they want things to be. When the press gives a contrary report, lying or misrepresentation is immediately suspected.

Best journalism advice is this: If your mother tells you something, check it out.
