The Russians have gone in

Zelensky speaks to U.S. Congress

Congress gives him a standing ovation but the U.S. and NATO stand firm and turn him down on a "no fly zone," the only thing IMHO, that can prevent an eventual victory by Putin.

But Putin has nukes - we are still afraid is the clear message.

Right response or not, what do we think?

Oh yes, Zelensky's already given Putin the no joining NATO promise Putin wanted so badly.

It occurs to me that while we shovel other military aid into Ukraine we are, while accepting an eventual Russian victory, USING the people of Ukraine to damage the Russian military, weaken Putin's resolve to restore Russia to its former greatness and make it less likely that he will attack a NATO country.

Out of sheer exhaustion the Russians will have to pause. NATO could be just buying some time, at the expense of thousands of dead Ukrainians and the destruction of a sovereign state.

Nevertheless, if I lived in one of the three Baltic states, I'd have a suitcase packed and ready to go.

Perhaps no MiGs for Ukraine,
which might be very difficult
to maintain and arm but Putin
may be in for a "knife" fight.

Reportedly the U.S. is ready
to supply Ukraine with
Switchblade drones. Produced
in two sizes, they represent
very deadly "suicide" aircraft.

Any U.S. Army vets here who
have handled or viewed their
operation?

I have no doubt the three Baltic States are next. He has troops and equipment in the area of operations. IMO Putin will use low yield tactical nukes to take the Baltic States. They are of great strategic importance to Russia.

It gets really interesting if China provides the requested military assistance. It also gets interesting because the Baltic States became part of NATO in 2004.

I for one am concerned that Russia has 6,400 nukes and missile superiority. I'm also concerned their are parties on both sides indicating they are up for a nuclear exchange.

My understanding is if that nuclear exchange were to take place 290 million people in America would be dead in minutes.

Here's what's in today's announced US weapons package to Ukraine:

Fact Sheet on U.S. Security Assistance for Ukraine | The White House

"...For the first time, the US is providing drones to Ukraine in the form of 100 "tactical unmanned aerial systems," the White House stated. Biden did not specify what drones will be delivered to Ukraine, but Politico reported that the drones are AeroVironment's Switchblade system, which loiters in the sky before crashing into its target..."

If you want to see how this ends, watch a history program on Hungarian Revolt of 1956. Western Europe has to much business with Russia. They aren't going to do jack. This all stems from western countries , especially UK and France money mongering on WW1. It's been all downhill since. The saying History Repeats is about to come true again.

Oliver Stone

Has anyone watched the Oliver Stone documentary on Youtube called Ukraine on Fire?

In the interest of seeing all sides I'm going to watch it but as it was produced by Oliver Stone, I'll be carrying a full salt shaker. I do not consider Stone to be an unbiased film maker.

Don't get too worried about nuclear mushrooms yet. Chances are still much better that this will end with a whimper rather than a bang.

Considering how optimistic Lavrov's remarks about the negotiations have been sounding, not contradicted by the Ukrainian side, the Russians may not have lost all sense for reality.

Putin's initial macro-goal of controlling all of Ukraine through a puppet government has gone up in smoke. In order to sell the Russian public a victory, he needs concessions on three topics: keeping Ukraine out of NATO, legally finalizing the annexation of Crimea, and the independence of the Donbas separatist "republics".

Both Zelensky and NATO have already put the first one on the table, and the Crimea is mostly symbolic. So the sticky point should be the secessionists. That could take years to untangle.

But with both sides talking about being close to an agreement that might at least hit pause and produce a cease-fire, I don't see anyone being desperate enough to have his finger hovering over the nuclear button.

So I watched Ukraine on Fire

It's a well made piece but one would have to be a foreign policy scholar to gauge its accuracy.

The closing minutes emphasizing the closeness of nuclear war strike me as propaganda. But the short, quick presentation of the history of Ukraine and the history of neo-nazism at work in the country during WWII are, to some extent true, although exaggerated in my view.

Putin has a squeaky, unimpressive voice. Sorry, couldn't help but notice. Does he really believe or could he possibly be right that the current regime are Nazis? Does he really fear NATO as he has said? Does NATO pose an existential threat to Russia's existence as a sovereign state?

Lots of folks question the wisdom of NATO expanding so rapidly under President Bill Clinton and I have often wondered if it was the wisest thing to do.

But it's done and we have to deal with it.

I still believe that a way must be found to give Putin his "off ramp" so we can halt this madness. And I do not believe that nuclear war is imminent,

"Ukraine on Fire"

If I have time later, I'll watch the whole thing, but just from watching the 3-min. trailer:

The only people interviewed about 2014 seem to be the overthrown pro-Putin Ukrainian president Yanukovich, his interior minister, and Putin himself, plus Robert Parry, a renowned American journalist earlier in his career who went off the rails with conspiracy theories involving the US government starting in the 1990s. That of course fits with Stone's inclinations. I don't think he would have had much trouble finding somebody representing the Ukrainian side if he had been interested in a balanced presentation.

So I will indeed watch this with a salt spoon at hand. I'm not surprised to hear it's well-made. If nothing else, Stone has always been a superb craftsman as a filmmaker. Heck, he managed to get a lot of Americans to take his JFK fantasy as a documentary.

Same with Platoon. Good fiction but there are a lot of members here who may have thoughts on the accuracy of the experience.

Hollywood will be Hollywood as a scorpion will be a scorpion (if you know the old story).

Watched "Ukraine on Fire."

One-sided with Stone and
his interviewees weaving
plots and conspiracies to
explain their ouster by the
big bad people of Ukraine
and their U.S. controllers.

Putin is hilarious when he
speaks of the importance
of the people having their
way in a democracy. He
portrays himself as a
defender of democracy.

I live around 100 miles from NAS JAX, and Mayport in JAX. I think there's a submarine base near the GA. FL. line too.

If it happens I want to be vaporized.
