The 'unofficial' 58 Club

Ok you 58 guys...what are you running for ammo in your guns...either for target work or defensive carry.....

My "target" load is a 210 bullet, either a Berry's plated or one of the commercially cast Magma 210 bevel base bullets behind 8.0 grains of Unique... one hole accurate, shoots to POA and duplicates the original all lead Police Load.

For carry it has been the Speer 210 Gold Dot (now Deep Curl) HP. 1180 from the 4" barrel, expands very well, shoots to POA and recoil isn't as bad as some of the others...

Bob

What are you loading under the Speer 210 Gold Dot?

What are you loading under the Speer 210 Gold Dot?

Target...8.0 grains of Unique....950 fps

Midrange...12.0 grains of SR4756...1200 fps (13.0 will make 1250)

Hunting....23.0 grains of H110....1350 fps

For carry I use factory which is 1180 fps.

The three expanded bullets from gallon jugs of water with the above loads....as I recall all the bullets stopped in the second or third gallon...

How to post photo's

Computer illiterate old dog wants to try to learn a new trick.

I need to post photo's of my model 58 to become an offical member and get lapel pin and membership card.

Have absolutley no idea how to do this. Can somebody instruct me, in plain and simple terms , how this is done?

My wife has a digital camera, and told me it has a computer connection. I can take the photo's... rember the term " computer illiterate " is literal.. And don"t use any abbrevations in instructions, I usually have no clue what they are. This is going to be fun.......gary

Welcome Gary,

We all look forward to seeing your 58....there is a sticky on the board somewhere about how to post your photos....I use photobucket (a 3rd party hosting site). I upload my photos there and use a like to insert them into my posts...maybe someone with the requisite knowledge can get you started at the basic level....there is a sticky somewhere...maybe the lounge?

anyhow...Welcome :)

This has been a want for a while. I bought this S serial number (1968 ish) beauty queen last week. Other than a turn line it does not have a mark on it. She not home yet, needs a transfer

Super. I like the S prefix guns the best....yours doesn't have the diamond grips....my recollection was that they stopped the diamonds in 1969 or thereabouts....It looks like a very nice example. Do you have plans to shoot or carry it?

The box is a nice touch...I wish that I could find a reasonable box for my first year nickle 58.

SW...nice looking 58 with original stocks...

Shooting reduced loads will help. I have fired very few full 1200+ fps loads from my 58s staying instead with reloads that equal the original Police load of 950 fps...

Need help posting model 58 photo's

SAFireman... Thanks for reply. Have been looking for photo posting sticky but not having any luck. I'm sure the directions are somewhere on the site but when you are computer illiterate finding specific information is tough. I tried searching FAQ but got zip . Used the terms: " posting photos " , " photos " , " photograph " and " photography " and got absolutely nothing in reguards to getting pictures on the site. What am I doing wrong?

Help....gary

Sign Me Up

I will be eligible soon, hopefully. I bought one today...Well, I haven't paid for it yet but the paperwork has been done and I have the cash for it in the safe. It would be home with me now but the "instant check" in Virginia is a joke right now. I always get put on a hold despite my unblemished record of public service and being a lifelong resident of the state with nothing on my record but one parking ticket 20 years ago. Right now, if one is on hold, the wait is two or three days or more...That is just sad. It adds up to a violation of the way the "instant check" was sold to the citizenry and has become a De facto waiting period.

It is an interesting story on this revolver. A local shop got a bunch of mint S&W's a few years ago from a collector's estate. I bought a couple myself. A friend got an unfired M58 out of the bunch that was NIB condition with all it left the factory with. I envied him since I had wanted one since I learned they existed when I was a rookie patrolman back in the late 70's. I imagined substituting it for my issued M10HB. I never saw one back then and didn't for many years. I came across a very worn example in a gun shop in the mid nineties and bought it for around $350 I think. I kept it a couple of years and traded it for something. Regretting that decision I went back to the shop a couple days later to buy it back but it was gone.

Unfortunately, the fellow that owned the mint M58 passed away not long ago. Shortly after that a minty M58 showed up in the case of a local shop. I examined it and except for a slight turn line it is in new condition. It was on consignment. Subsequently, I learned that it is the gun the friend has gotten from the estate. I assume the money from the sale will go to his family. The price was quite reasonable considering the condition and curent prices. It will mean even more to me since it belonged to a good guy. I don't think I will be selling or trading this one. That being the case, it will no longer be a "safe queen" and I will shoot it and carry it when I want...

Max...don't know anything about the finish.. Bought it off of AuctionArms a few years ago....

Frizz...that is a nice story..and a gun and friend to be remembered.

I humbly request tentative admission to the 58 club. I would have one, but none are to be had at my current location, which essentially means I simply can't own one, please pity me. However, I have full intention of gaining full membership when I finally move back to the land of the free. After seeing some of the many photos (and with no "like" button ), I can't wait for it to happen. Disregard MIM and IL for a moment, and someone tell me what they think of the current "classic" 58 in blue, 4". Whoevever posted that picture of the 58 next to the M10 sold me!!!

Gary,

Here is the sticky (don't feel badly, it took me a day to find it).

Well, IMHO, a modern M58 is mech better than NO M58... But I recommend trying to find a "S" era if one shows up, followed by a "N" era gun.

Grips

I wasn't sure if the earlier s guns ( diamond grips ) rounded in at the bottom like the later guns , wish i could find a set of these grips reasonable , and a couple of later 58 sets for n range guns , thanks 41steve

Picked up this early one (S259xxx) a couple years ago. Magnas, big hands and full house loads aren't a good combo. Waiting for a warmer day to try out reduced loads. Apologies for photo focus, need a tripod.
