I'd agree. It's time for a revolver and the 686/586 is just what you need to fill that void in your life. Extremely versatile with ammo and lots of barrel lengths to choose from.
It doesn't get any better than a K frame .22 ( M18, M17 or M617) for affordable fun at the range or plinking. You probably will have to spend a bit more though, maybe $650 -$700. .22lr is back in stock and getting more affordable .
If you prefer something less expensive, used .38 Special guns can still be found for less than $500. I prefer a K frame, but there are some very reasonable priced J frames both new and used if you want a snubby for carry.
For fun without breaking the bank get a good .22 rifle, or maybe two if
you're looking to spend up to $500. Lots of them out there. Maybe a
classic steel and walnut Winchester, Marlin or Remington or a new Ruger
10-22 or Marlin 60 for not a lot of money. Every gunny needs a good .22

You need 870 in 12 guage. , then a .357 medium frame 4" revolver.
Dont get caught up in old vs new. Not everyone has time or access to pawn shops and such.

I would suggest a nice used Browning Citori 12 gauge. I would recommend one of the older Sporting Clays models. This should run in the $1000-1400 range. The newer discontinued models are a big step up in price, and won't fill the casual use need any better. It will last a lifetime (or 3!) and is already at the bottom of the price cycle. You can shoot Skeet, Sporting Clays, small game, Waterfowl and even Zombies with it! Smaller gauges are available, and have their place, but usually the price goes up a big step as the gauge goes down in size.

$500 budget? Can get a good pump shotgun for that. Get a dual barrel package or one with interchangable chokes and you could do everything from skeet shooting to destroying stuff with slugs to actual hunting. Plus they are primo home defense weapons.
Target and game load shotshells are fairly inexpensive. In my area, cheaper than 38 special range ammo per round.

If I were to make a basic must have list it would be:
22 LR pistol(preferably target style) - M&P 22 compact CHECK
Pump shotgun(field/security combo - versatility)
Glock 19 or 17 - M&P 2.0 CLOSE ENOUGH
Medium/Large frame 357 Magnum revolver
Ruger 10/22
AR-15 - AR-556 CHECK
30/30 Lever Action
Carry size pistol - P238 & Shield CHECK
That being said for what you are asking for I would probably be looking for a 357 revolver first. You should be able to find a used S&W 686/586/19/13/66/65/28 or Ruger GP100/Service Six/Security Six or Colt Trooper in your price range.
Whatever you end up with keep shooting, keep expanding you collection and most importantly keep having fun.
This is fun to shoot and makes a great prop on Halloween as long as you put on your Sharkskin suit and best hat

Looks like you need to expand your calibers. How about a 40s&w and a 357 sig? You get both with a Sig P250. Comes with 2 barrels that are drop ins. Mags and slides stay the same. I believe the P320 is the same gun but striker fired.

The best value in the $300 - $400 range is Canik TP9SA or SF...SFL and SFX are a tad more, but you can find them under $500 and they are longer barrel sweet shooters. Do some internet research and you will find 90% positive.
Get a "roots" gun....either a classic revolver or 9mm and harken back to the "olden" day and find out where modern guns come from.
I'd suggest a Model 10 in .38 special or a 39- . (Or a 59 series if you like double stacks.)
For a bit more history without getting into collectibles you can find a Walther P1 in your price range (same as P38 without the premium of a WWII collectible).
Sigs are semi addictive (it's called the Sig-ness) and I'd start with a P6.
If you are going to stay with S&W, stay with a steel pistol; and go a bit more modern, look for a 6906...3rd generation reliability, carryable, classic.
So many choices...so little money.

For a gun, in your price range I go along with a revolver. A model 10 would fit your budget & be a great one to jump into the revolver pool. A shotgun is 1 everybody should have as well, IMO.

One of my favorites and one I really like to shoot and I think if you can find one it won't break the bank is the Beretta Cougar.
Now I have two Berettas one in .40 and one in .45 You can get them in 9mm as well
I like my .40 and it's a pleasure to shoot.
Beretta gave them up to Stoeger and my understanding is that they are still well made but not as nice as the Beretta version.
