To Move Or Abandon a Safe

Two professional safe movers each quoted me $900.00 to move an 475-pound, $800.00 safe from my basement to a PODS container in my driveway. The move involved a flight of stairs as well as three additional steps outside the house. As my home sale will be handled by a real estate broker, the odds of finding a buyer who would want my gun safe seemed remote, at least in my blue state where most people are afraid of guns.

Despite the sticker shock, I bit the bullet and moved the safe as its replacement cost would be much higher than the cost of moving it. I will never again put a safe in the basement. I plan on installing the safe in the garage of my new home.

$900.00 seemed expensive. In retrospect, four men were needed. They brought along specialized equipment including a miniaturized fork-lift that picked up the safe off of my poured concrete "Hurricane Sandy" pedestal, then, a battery-powered hand truck that climbed the basement stairs with safe attached.

Years ago, nine friends helped me get a 1000 pound jewelers safe into my basement, a thoughtless move on my part, considering that had anything gone wrong, someone could have lost his foot, if not his life. That was the safe that Hurricane Sandy ruined and which was previously removed from my house by a safe mover.

Having had the experience of a do-it-yourself endeavor and two separate moves by professional safe movers, I feel that the pros are worth the money and deserve the fees they charge, even if the moving cost is higher than the cost of the safe.

It's one thing to learn to be handy, to learn how to sheetrock, tape and sparkle, to paint, to change a light switch or the many other skills needed to keep a house fit for habitation. But, I've learned to draw the line where pricey, specialized equipment is needed and where a misstep can cause permanent or fatal injury. I'm worth a lot more than $900.00, as are my family and friends whom I could have put a risk to save that money.

As an added bonus, not only did they move the safe but they also brought up the heavy, seven-drawer file cabinet partially visible to the left of the safe as well as my wife's stationary recumbent bicycle, free of additional charge. $900.00 well spent.

Eggs are cheaper in the country. :)

I had this big Browning moved up from the basement and then down 2 steps and hauled 3 miles, unloaded on level ground and bolted down for $250 last summer. Took 3 guys a little less than 2 hours. I was offered $400 so I figure I've got $650 in a $2000 retail safe. Anyone in the Louisville area should call ReMarkable Moving 40222 if you need a safe moved.

A couple of months ago I was the recipient of a nice safe from about 50 miles south of me. Member Lobogunleather here was getting it out of a family members home who had passed. He had no time to deal with it and posted it for grabs. I woke up at the right time.

I paid to have it moved here rather than trying to round up friends and a truck. Money well spent for sure. I don't have such a good back.

Wow, I hired piano movers to take my 900 pound scale off a truck, lug it around the back of my house, which is a steep slope. Then into my back basement door. Then across the basement, $200.

I've moved mine several times. The first time I couldn't find anyone to move it but talked to someone that worked with safes. The guy told me to empty the safe and take the door off, said the door would just lift right off and save 200 lbs. The door did indeed come off.

I had 2 beefy guys move it for $75. With the door off I can move it around the room but wouldn't want to try steps by myself.

I suppose I'd sterilize the safe of gun-holding hardware, and explain it was used for valuables. If I were buying, hell, I'd consider a sizable basement safe to be a plus.

But is $900 less or more than what a buyer would knock off an offer, without saying as much? Is $900 worth carrying the house for another month waiting for the next offer, even? Definitely money well spent. Really, guys--you've no idea how nasty and stupid people can be up here. I could easily see a buyer not making an offer on a house because they thought there might be forgotten guns hidden in the house.

The one thing I will say, Federali--with the utmost respect, as I'm sure you know I have for you--is that safes in garages are the easiest to rip off. Although I'm sure you plan on having it secured in place.

It's a shame nobody makes a big tool cabinet-type enclosure that could be built around a safe, just to hide it from prying eyes. I mean, you can frost the glass for when the garage door is down, but the door still has to open. I've heard of guys sticking safes in old fridges, or building a cabinet around them, though. Frequently, the latter requires the safe to be sat on a small pedestal to give the door floor clearance.

Place I used to work at had a few safes that were in the 6000 to 9000 pound range. Too heavy for the floor to support and too big to fit through doorways. Need to hire a construction crew before you can even think about moving one of those. It costs LOTS of money to replace one of those.

I, too, think selling the safe with the house would be the way to go, especially from the cost/benefit point of view. Many potential buyers would feel lucky to find a house with such a secure storage area. I know I would, even if I were not a gun owner. (Or rather, used to be, before that tragic boating accident.) A nice "bonus," in other words.

$900 is a rip off. I used to move safes. One man with a stair climbing dolly can move an 800 pound safe himself. No way it should take four men to move a 475 pound safe.

Thank you! When I moved mine and talked to someone that sold safes it was an eye opener. I have never paid more then $75 to move mine and I don't have a small safe. Think mine weighs somewhere near 600 lbs.
