To Re-Load or Not???

I will only use the CCI-41 or now the new wolf equivalent. The cost is close or the same most of the time.

CCI41 Military Small Rifle Primers $25.00/ 1000 or $125.00/5000

CCI450 Magnum Small Rifle Primers $25.00 per 1000

here is the reg primer

CCI400 Standard Small Rifle Primers $26.00 per 1000

where are these prices from ? CCI41 for 25.00 per 1000 ?

Really That is a good question!! the cheapest I have paid was $35 I have seen them as High as $43
Powder Vally has Tula .223 for $20.50

Sorry I had a double last night and I have to do another one today at work, 4pm to 8 am.
yes that's where I get my primers and powders from but I do keep checking other sites :D

I have been having a problem getting a good load for the Hornady SPSX 55gr bullet. Yesterday I shot some loaded down to 26.7gr of CFE223. They worked but didnt completely shred apart like they talk about. at about 60 yards they poked holes through 1/4" soft iron plate but they did better than they have in the past!!

I shot today at the range with the Winchester 54.9 bullets with CFE223, 28.5 grains ,I had a 1/2 in group at 50 yards the .1 makes a big difference.I will go back up to 28.6 for next trip.

On a good note tho, the range had some federal M193's so I picked up 20 and tested them. they fired good in my girl (less then a 1/2 in group at 50 yards and the fps was 3030-3065 and the primers are a bit flattened with these girls just like the 28.6. I did save two rounds so I can tear them apart to verify col grains ect and I will get to test my primer pocket cutter I just got on them :D

Well boys I jumped in the reloading pool...but backwards. After all this mess started I was leaning towards reloading. I decided in this environment I would HAVE to start backwards by buying components first. Last night bought 2000 CCI #41 primers. Today 1000 55 gr hornady sp and 500 55 gr hornady vmax. It's ALL disappearing quickly it seems. I can buy powder at least to get started from bass pro and hopefully they carry something decent. Brass I already have from my xm193 bulk purchases.

Looking at the lee breech lock press kit / dies and whatever else I'll need equipment wise. It's just going to have to wait until my budget recovers! BAD time to have to buy the consumables but I'm very uneasy about when supplies will return to normal. Plus I needed them anyway!

Let the fun begin! I've been reading this thread daily. I think I'm up to page 10. Lol

Remington bulk 50 gr hollow point .224 diameter bullets, Accurate Arms 2230 powder, the primers you have on the shelf, and a middle of the road powder charge. OAL = 2.260" so it fits in the mags.

Now was that so tough? That combo has been killing prairie dogs with gusto out to 400 yards since 1985. Works in ARs, bolt guns, or Ruger #1. That's a PHD load, piled higher and deeper.

No doubt. I'm putting off an M1 Garand purchase and hoping the reload equipment and consumable prices drop down some in a few months. I was planning on getting reload gear in the summer for Father's Day/Birthday/ Anniversary but might have to see if funds can be found sooner. And then there's the tax hike we're all looking at next month. I'm glad we put off buying a new car as the tax increase is about what a car payment would be. Time to just save up and start paying cash.

Grover
I get excellent accuracy with them using 24.0 of H335 with an oal of 2.230

A local gun shop here just ordered 40 new AR's from Windham and 40 from Bushmaster.
Reloading supplies are a different story, nothing he has ordered has been available.

Has powder been an issue as well or only bullets / primers??

From what I've seen you can add once-fired .223/5.56 brass to the list as well. You can probably expect all of the powders used for 223 reloading to start drying up soon as well.

Powdervalley.com and Grafs only has CFE in 1 lb bottles. Grafs is also out of Varget and H335 while Powdervalley has only 1 lb bottles. Wideners is just about out of all the above.

I'm off to bass pro to buy what I can thanks for the heads up. I'll look on the net as well hazmat cost or not.

I'll reuse the brass I have. Fortunately I had the insight to stock up on factory ammo while it was available. For a beginner what's a good powder to snag??

Unfortunately reloading is not a "on size fits all" proposition. So all of the loads that we've listed in this thread are personal recipes that may or may not work well in your rifle. Grover loves his CFE. Rebs081 gets fantastic results with H335. The AR purists swear by Varget. I'm using mil-surp WC844 because I've found a load that shoots well for me, and because I'm cheap, ;)

I understand that after days of reading up. Based on your pm reco (thanks!) and Grover and my previous discussions I went with the H335. Ordered 8 pounds so I have enough for all my primers and bullets ordered. A risk? Sure... but considering there are no good local suppliers besides the very limited selection at bass pro I decided at least I could used a widely accepted powder for this first "round" and get them the best I can. After that I can experiment once the market stops going crazy. So I'm all in now!! No turning back!! I really think I'll enjoy it!!

Welcome to the club Zip:D

I stocked up on primers and powder. I now have 24 lbs of CFE223 and 5k CCI 41 primers and 8 lbs of hs-6 and 5 k small pistol primers.

I talked to S & W today and they said if they charge my CC the rifle was shipped and the charge appeared on my CC today so now I will be a proud owner of a M & P 15 300 whisper/blkout, M & P 15 5.56, M & P 15-22.

Now all I need to do is find that blasted elusive M & P 15-22 pistol they made.

Thanks GMC and a thanks to Grover and BHarada for a little off forum info. I really appreciate it. There is so much good info on this thread alone and very soon I'll be ordering a few books on reloading. What is KILLING me right now is I am SO CLOSE to being able to start but I just have to hold out just a little longer. My budget is SCREAMING at me! Just $200 more in basic equipment is all I need but muuuuust resiiiist!!!!!! LOL
