Tula .223 is it as bad as they say?

I've burned up a gob of tula, wolf, S&B, brown & silver bear in my mixmaster parts gun. I have had fired cartridge cases stuck in the chamber several times... BUT it occured on 90+ degree temps after going through 7-8 magazines pretty quick (heat off the float tube would burn your fingers) doing drills and I had neglected to clean the chamber after my last range session. Steel case, dirty chamber, high ambient temp, and a cookin' barrel = stuck case in my carbine. Haven't had one stick as long as I keep the chamber clean. Angel didn't piss in my musket..... failed out of neglect.

Would the steel cased stuff be my first choice for social work.... no. But with good maintenance it works fine for practice.

I shoot it in everything. Glocks, S&W, 1911s, ARs, AKs, Remington 700. Only ever had one problem. A batch had primers set to deep and the firing pin on my AK would barely touch it. Otherwise i never had a jam, failure or any broken parts. Ive been shooting this ammo non stop since about 2005

im happy to say that my OR isnt a picky eater... ive had everything from hornady vmax's to tula/wolf for plinkin through it without any FTF,FTL, or FTEs ... when i originally asked this question, i was basically wondering if this would damage my gun... NOPE.. it just keeps nomnomin on ammo and then shouting at me MMMOOOAAAAARRRR!!!!!!

With so many different answers this thread may have been "moar" useful with a poll ?

All the thread has told me is ....roll the dice. YMMV

I actually shot ONLY 60 rounds of this stuff yesterday. I just finished cleaning and WOW this stuff is dirty. There was a pink film over everything! It preformed fine, but I will never purchase the cheap stuff again. Spend a couple of bucks more and save yourself a lot of time cleaning.

Well guys if you haven't figured it out yet the tula works grate with the S&W sport because of its melonite barrel and 1 in 8 twist. The sport was made too shoot cheap stuff. I run Tula exclusively though my sport 2,500 rd+ and not a single problem.
Just add lots of lube;)

"The Sport was made to shoot cheap stuff" Where in the world did you hear that (edited from the original question)? The Sport was made to shoot and to shoot accurately, If you would read the "sticky thread" titled barrel specs for sport you would find out that Melonite surpasses chrome lining in every test. the 1-8 5R rifling is a compromise to allow the rifle to shoot a wide variation of bullet weights accurately. Yes my Sport shoots the cheap stuff, it also is super accurate with the good stuff, far more accurate than alot of the other brand of rifles out there, I didnt say all, Noveske makes a fine barrel. But to say the Sport was made to shoot the cheap stuff is a generalization that is simply untrue!

The Sport shoots the cheap stuff more accurately and more reliably than most if not all other AR's too the point where It dose not make sense to spend more than $6.00 on a box of ammo unless you just need a heaver round for hunting, Law enforcement etc.

I shoot Tula from time to time in my spikes ar. No problems so far, little dirty compared to other brands but not bad

Just to throw lead down range I can agree with you. I quit buying it when I needed that extra edge of accuracy for hunting, and I bought a bunch of brass cased ammo so I can reload it for even more accuracy. I mostly hunt prairie dogs with it, which are the size of squirrels and not big ones either. Plus my shots run to the long side so you can see where I might need some extra accuracy. I really hate wounding an animal of any kind.

I used Tula ammo to sight in my red dot on my M&P15 OR yesterday.

I sighted it in at 25 yards, and it was good at 50, 100, 200, and 250 yards.

The 250 yard range was a 8" steel target.

It also worked at 400 yards with some holdover.

No FTF or FTE problems through 100rounds.

S&WOkie....I will be in Oklahoma tomorrow till Tuesday. Anyway great shooting, my 250 yard target is about 8" by 2". But when I got my sport I also bought a thousand rounds of Tula, brown bear and silver bear. Those were the bullets that convinced me on how accurate my rifle was. I dont discredit them. I guess I just like rolling my own!!

I had shot over 500 round of Tula and had no problems and I clean my AR after every trip. After buying 500 rounds I went to the range and one of the cartridges expanded in my barrel after firing. We had to take off the upper and slam a cleaning rod through the barrel to get the cartridge out. Now I am just trying to use it up and never buying it again because i have had problems with Tula ever since. We are talking multiple jams every two magazines and dud primers.

I have been shooting Tula in my Bodyguard 380, purchased from Sportsman Warehouse. Had several FTF from light primer strikes (happened on all brands ammo) and sent my gun back to S&W for repair.

Got the gun back, bought another box of Tula to try, and my gun would not even chamber the rounds! At first I thought S&W had messed something up, but then I tried a round from another box of Tula that I had sitting around. it chambered fine.

So I started comparing the two boxes. Both were same bullet weight, and when measured, both were the same length. The odd thing was, the bullets from the box that would not chamber, were WIDER on the end, than the other box. It was just wide enough to not allow my gun to chamber all the way.

I contacted tula and they reimbursed me. It is also the last box of Tula I will ever buy. Saving 4 or 5 bucks is not worth it, no matter how much I shoot !

Wow.

Interesting information.

I've fired Tula through my M&P 15 Sport and so far no problems.
Wondering if it was just a bad batch? It happens.
I have micrometers so I'll check some to see if I detect this.

I'll post back what I find soon.

Even though this is a M&P 15 Thread, not everyone posts info about that specific rifle. Were you using an M&P 15?

Have you checked to see if some of the polymer coating as baked off onto the walls of your chamber? I have heard of that happening.:)

This is my question also.

It sounds like the gun needs a good cleaning with a chamber brush to remove all the gunk.

It is my understanding that because the steel casings do not expand as much as the brass casings, that residue can build up in the chamber causing the problems you are having.
