A couple of months ago I asked a question regarding the difference in the finish on the alloy frames of a 39-2 and a 6904. Here is the thread:

http://smith-wessonforum.com/smith-...ls/234140-alloy-frame-question-39-6900-a.html

Short story long, one of my gunsmith's cop customers brought in an old duty 6904, usual story "carried a lot, shot a little" and boy did it look it! It was beat, the frame, the slide, every part of the pistol showed from years of carry. This little nine was smooth and tight, and with my smithy knowing my penchant for all things S&W - I had to have it. At $200 w/2 mags, figured I had myself a little fun gun.

Well, my smith had a different idea. Recalling the success we had with the 39-2 he offered to "experiment" with the 6904, to see if he could create something different, unique, yet entirely functional as well as more appealing to the eye. When you see the finished result, I think you will agree with me when I say he went above and beyond!

Not sure what he did, what favors he called in, or what this would cost in the real world, but to say it is phenomenal would be an understatement. He had the frame bead blasted, the slide reblued, the stainless hard parts refinished, and I now own one of one...or, when parked next to the 39-2, two of two!

Wait for it...

It is worth it...

Patience fellas....

I always liked the serial number of this little 39-2

What does everyone think?

When I think 9mm I think "Glock who?"

That just plain good looking. If the cost isn't too onerous, there's a boatload of 39-2's with really beat up finishes on GB for pretty cheap. They're bad enough that I'd waive my usual reluctance on refinishing just to experiment.

Ok, now I was told you were not suppose to bead blast the frames in another link due to them being anodized and you would be removing the anodizing. What is the difference between a gunsmith beadblasting one and my beadblasting one? I was wanting to clean up the wear areas on my CS45.

The 39-2 was the easy one (guess so, I wasn't the one doing the work!), he just cooked the frame in his ultrasonic cleaner with the heat on and the anodizing lifted off. It was a simple process to just buff off the remainder and then finish polish the frame before reassembling.

The finish did NOT come off the 6904 the same way, which frustrated him no end. The ultrasonic didn't touch the anodizing on that frame, so I think he sent it to someone he knew to be blasted.

Either way, I am happy with the outcome and figured I would share to give you all some inspiration and show there can be new life in some of these old guns. At first I wasn't sure I was going to like the look, being a traditional all blue or all stainless guy, but I have to admit these two are real eyecatchers.

Thanks for the comments.

Wonder what he is using in his ultrasonic? Sure isn't what I use in mine since I've never seen it remove anodizing. Must be a different anodizing since in the marine field, anodized alum is an electroplated process. Now if you do leave alum alloy in the ultrasonic for too long with the heat on, it removes all the oils from the metal and renders it useless. Not as bad if you leave the heater off.

Very handsome result on both those pistols. I am concerned, though, when is mentioned that the anodizing has been removed. This ruins the finish of the gun, and significantly reduces its' lifespan. Bare aluminum is a very soft metal. It can be "engraved" with a common set of nail-clippers. The anodizing treatment hardens the surface to a very stout finish, comparable to steel.

That being said, was the surface of the gun "re-anodized" (I don't know if that's even possible), or was it left as bare aluminum? Refinished, and I'd say the dress-up is good to go. Bare aluminum would make ol' 537 weep...

that is gorgeous and you got a great deal.i paid $389 for my 6904 blued in terrible condition with 1 mag haha
