Let me start by saying I am sorry if this is the wrong place to post this. I tried to post it in the lounge earlier with no responses but I know people looked at it, threads show numbers of views. Maybe I'll have better luck here.
I just sent a MP15-22 in for warranty repair and I have a few questions about this process.
1. Will S&W call and let you know that it was delivered? Or just take FedEx tracking as it was delivered good?
2. Will they call and let you know what they figured out and if they will or will not fix it?
3. Will they call and let you know that they are shipping it back and give you tracking number? This one concerns me most as I have heard that an adult must be home to sign for rifle and wife and I both work.
Thanks in advance for your assistance

I do not know about S&W but I can give props to Sig Sauer. I sent in my P226 for some work and they received in on a friday and by the next thursday I had an email that it has been shipped back to me. I picked it up at the local Fed EX office that Friday One week door to door. Great service and the 226 runs like a watch.

I would call and follow up simply because of what it is. We're not talking about a camera here. Additionally, if their service dept. is acting anything like their sales dept. lately, ugh.

The last time I had to send anything in.

#1 I used UPS. There tracking is second to none. It's also the lable they sent at my request. It was UPS overnight.

#2 All I got was a letter with my weapon when it returned. IF,they have to charge you (BIG IF),they would email you before doing anything and get a CC payment up front. Something just "brake" or did you do the "boo-boo"? They will (?) also make any updates to your weapon free of charge too. It will also be returned in factory condition. Any added parts on your behalf "should" be returned with your weapon.

#3 I got a shipping notice via email and UPS tracking #.

#4 I know my UPS driver and he delivered to my address when he knew I'd be there to sign for it.

#5 Best way to do the shipping (if you can),is send it through your LGS and it will return to them.

Over all,S&W was great about keeping me informed (going & coming) through email (didn't get any calls). Also helps to know your UPS or Fed-X driver. You might end up taking a vacation day,the day it's suppose to show up. They won't leave it with out an adult signing for it. Good luck.

I had to send a 1522 back for warranty work back in the spring of 2010. They sent me a shipping label. It had to go by fed ex because s&w told me ups wouldn't take a gun. That surprised me. It will be returned to your doorstep by fed ex- at least mine was. Fed ex or s&w sent me an email because it requires a signature on delivery if I remember correctly. I think my dad signed for it as he lives across the street. I wasn't home and dad handed me the box when I got home. If you are not home , you will have to go to fed ex building and sign for it there. BTW- it is a plain box with no s&w logos on it. Keep the box in case you have to send it back again, or send another one back. I hope this helps.:)

I wonder if that could be a regional or contract thing with S&W and the shippers. From what I understand (it is Federal law),all weapon's MUST be sent express overnight. I have heard that from both LGS & UPS drivers. Fed-X drivers here just give you the "deer in the headlights" look and say they don't ship any kind of weapons ?????

You don't deal with the drivers! You go to the FedX office. They know what you need to do. The drivers are just that - delivery drivers.

And that would be wrong. Only handguns need to be. Long guns (rifles and shotguns) can go United States Postal Service Parcel Post even.

I'll stick with UPS on shipping anything. Their tracking has the rest beat. I've had too many things get lost or beat up with USPS.

Just sent one back about 3 weeks ago. Requested a prepaid label. Call FedX to arrange a pick up. Drive showed up and I nfomed him it was a firearm, and He said he would handle it with care. Never got word from S&W that they received it, but I tracked by the tracking #.

S&W sent my return tracking info 11 days later. That was the only correspondence I got. They did include the repair ticket in the box when they sent it back to me.

Update

Okay got rifle back today, there was a note in box stating repaired, up to latest spec. Happy, happy now I need to find time to go out and shoot it, just to make sure for myself.;)

But what was weird about this is; as stated prior called S&W, they sent FedEx label through mail, took right at week for that, shipped through local FedEx office, saw on FedEx tracking when it was delivered (2-14) Did not receive any word from S&W they got it, then I did not receive word (through call or email, and I had both listed on letter that was taped to rifle) that it was being shipped back. Luckily my neighbor was home and I had told him a week or so ago it might be coming back that I would let him know ahead of time since he is retired and our FedEx person knows to take anything to his house that needs to be signed for. Just seemed weird they didn't call or send email with tracking info. I get the not calling as then it would possibly turn into 50 questions, what did they do to it? How did it happen? Etc. but a simple email saying rifle or pistol is being shipped today here is the tracking number. Heck it could have ended up anywhere I would have never known it was already shipped. Glad that didn't happen and I have it back so back out to shoot as soon as possible.
Sorry I went on so long but wanted to give update.
And again
Thanks to all of you for assisting/ answering this newbies questions.
Jeff:)

Well I sent mine off a little over a month ago and it took them almost a full month to get it back with the only confirmation being fedex, I think that is pretty crappy. Yes it was fixed but my front sight was gouged when I got it back, they are sending me a new site but it all is suspect on their end not keeping their customers informed.

When I tried to ship my Governor, S&W sent me a FedEx label. When I called FedEx they informed me they only shipped weapons from dealer to dealer or manufacturer. Upon calling S&W customer service, I was informed that S&W has a special contract with FedEx and they are supposed to ship handguns. According to S&W it does NOT have to be express overnight but can be 2 day. This was just a couple of weeks ago. Fortunately, I live only about a 30 minute drive from the factory and was able to just take it there and deliver it at the Guardhouse, the personnel at which gave me a receipt and said they would call when the gun was ready to come back to me. So much more direct. For what it's worth in the conversation....

No special deal - FedEx ships to any manufacturer. I've done it more than once. Whoever you talked to at FedEx was ignorant of their own policies.
