Warshing Machine help needed !

My Maytag of almost 15 years started leaking at the lower tub seal and it happened due to my misusing the washer. It cost me a little less than two hundred to fix it and the older fellow that just subcontracts with the dealer repairing washing machines told me that mine was better made than anything made today and it was worth every penny repairing it.

eBay is definitely a great source for parts as I've bought belts for less than half price of what the retailer wanted.

If your transmission is indeed bad, try to find an ex-Maytag/appliance guy to install it on the side...

I'll second that. I work on em for a living.

Every appliance in my house is a Whirlpool. Recently replaced a 15 year old Roper washer and dryer pair that had never had a malfunction. Bought a Whirlpool top load Cabrio series washer/steam dryer. Washer doesn't have the agitator spindle in the center and the load capacity is huge, as is the dryer. Wife loves it.

One of the advantages of staying in the same town all your life is you get to know people. The guy that owns Dixie Appliance in downtown Louisville is a 40 year pal and the Whirlpool service rep lives about a mile from me and is another longtime friend. The cabrio w/d was an unboxed floor model set that he bought from a home show display. He gave me family price that saved me about 40%. Washer/dryer boxes don't add value. :D

Only problems I can recall was the ice maker crapped out after about 15 years and the coating on the dishwasher rack started pealing. The icemaker was $125 and Dixie replaced the dw rack free. Thought of another service run. The timer went out on the electric range probably 10 years ago and the range is a late 80s model. Don't remember what the timer cost but it didn't leave a mark so must not have been too bad and it's still working. Buy Whirlpool.

The Maytags of old were built like tanks and lasted forever, but that stopped a few years ago and they are now among those that barely make it past warranty expiration. I found this out the hard way after being a firm Maytag customer for our 48 years of housekeeping. A friend who does appliance repair tells me none are built that great these days, but advised that we get an upper end Kitchen Aide or Whirlpool, as they seemed to be the better of the current market, in his opinion, and he works on them for a living. Nearly all major brands have a cheaper series that are made to sell, rather than last, so as in most cases, you get what you pay for.

I like Whirlpool. Before I moved I was in the market for a new machine. I let the saleman talk me into a Maytag. Worse machine I've ever owned. I had nothing but problems with it. When I moved I gave it away to a scrap collector and bought a Whirlpool.

Top loader & WAY under $600

I used to work on appliances first for GE and then Amana/Speed Queen. I don't know about today's machines but am not impressed with the quality of my almost new Whirlpool refrigerator.
I'm keeping a pair of 15 year old Amana/Speed Queen washer and dryer going. It's cheaper since I do the work myself but if it isn't too costly I'd fix your old Maytag as they were good machines back then at least.

In the old days most all appliances were over built because they were built by proud Americans who worked for proud American companies.
