We got a raise!

Higher tax brackets don't mean all your income is taxed at a higher rate once you've crossed a threshhold, it means the income over that threshold is taxed at a higher rate. Not going to cost anyone any money just because they got a little more money (leaving out things like social programs/low income housing in some cases of course).

That's the wrong way to look at it. If you are "poor" and SS is all you got, you get it all. But the higher your tax bracket, the more of your SS is taxed.....up to a limit.

SS is YOUR money, and you paid taxes on it when you earned it. Now, when they give it back to you they tax you again.

"SS is YOUR money, and you paid taxes on it when you earned it. Now, when they give it back to you they tax you again." That is the galling part. At one time, benefits weren't taxable. Now they are for many.

Not debating the morality of taxation, just discussing the higher bracket part.

Dang that raise! I'm not even on Medicare yet (March 22), and It's gone already! Cancel that rib-eye, gimme the eye of round, cancel the Bud Light and gimme Natty Light, and, well, I always could use more ammo!!!
Have Yugos actually lasted this long??

Didn't know they still made NAtty Bo, is Stroh's still around, used to be prety good when I lived in Ind. in the early 60's.

But the big question is why? It's not just Soc Sec. My military retired pay, my Civil Service retired pay are all going up by 5.9%. The reason is the Consumer Price Index has jumped between 5.8% and 5.9% so the increase is already eaten up, by gas prices, food prices, med cost (thank God I am retired military and the military covers the majority of the costs) Plus that I turned 76 this year and my auto and motorhome insurance jumped 35% That alone eats up the monthly increase that I don't have yet. Plus that I pay into Survivors benefits in both military and civil service and that is going up 5.9% as well. That I really don't mind. If I shuffle off this mortal coil my wife will still have a decent income. But there's really nothing to cheer about here.

The WRONG in S.S. has far TO many persons " drawing"it, those that Never Worked. Many of our " recent citizens" are getting it, children get it, people that are " disabled get it". Sorry if some are offended but originally S.S. was for ONLY those that had EARNED it, their $$$ in their account based on their S.S. number. Over the years those in dc have done what they do best and now they tell you," Since your income is such and such you only get a percentage of your S.S." . How is that right????

Yep. My friend "Doc" has an older couple for patients, came here from Central America fairly recently. Immediately qualified for SSI, combined about $2K/mo, based on "need." Medicaid and Medicare based on income. Section 8 housing based on income. EBT for groceries based on income. No mystery why everybody wants to come here. The streets are "paved with gold." Joe

Speaking of Yugos, there used to be a Cadillac dealer in the South Oakland area of Pittsburgh that had a deal in the mid 1980's. Buy any Caddy (except the Cimarron, which was a marketing disaster for GM), get a Yugo free.

Literally, the had to give them away.

Have they announced how much the medicare increase will be yet? Most years that comes after the COLA announcement and most years it eats up most of the social security increase.

I remember a couple years ago my net was $1/month after the medicare deduction.

I read somewhere that the medicare would increase by $10. Saw it on the internet, so it must be true.

In Ohio if you get a pension from a police department or other State pension system you worked for, your SS monthly benefit is reduced by more than half of what you should get:mad:. It's a bunch of garbage. The State FOP has been trying to get the State Legislature to fix that, but so far no luck.

The company that handles my medication prescriptions has told me that my monthly cost is going up more than 3 fold. I finally decided to get my prescriptions from the VA since I'm eligible for that benefit.

How much will be left after they increase the amount you pay each month for Part B? Last time it ate up over 60% of the increase.

I believe all NYC/NYS retirees, and their spouses, are reimbursed for Part B costs. I know retired uniformed personnel and their spouses are. The Gov tried to take that back recently but was thwarted by the legislature.
Safe for another 10 years.

You must be CSRS. FERS is only going up 4.9%. For some unknown reason FERS increases are limited by law to a lower level than is CSRS.
