Wearing a face mask...

I see more of the opposite problem, one party hell-bent to open up the economy for the same reason no matter the risk.

But we better leave it at that, or we'll get in trouble with forum management. ;)

Never mentioned it, but when I saw your handle I looked it up and then ordered a copy of 'Absalom, Absalom'. Great book, so thanks for that.

I disagree with both of you that the problems are political. All government decisions at any level are influenced by politics, but I'm seeing similar policies across the board, and they all put health first. No governor wants to be the one whose state fails, or even does more poorly than others - each is under the microscope.

The real test for each of them now, is to re-open successfully, keeping less-affected areas in mind. When they put these policies in place, they couldn't treat some counties differently, or the more heavily-enforced areas would cry "foul". But re-opening is different, as now they have numbers to base their decisions on.

But this is a test for each of us personally. If you are acting like a fool, your neighbors are seeing it, and vice-versa. These are times that we will remember for the rest of our lives, so behave how you want to be remembered.

I have to disagree 100%. It isn't one party hell-bent when thousands of protesters flock together at their Capitol. It isn't one party hell-bent on reopening businesses that have so many people unemployed. Here in Colorado and across the Country businesses can open only if they follow certain guidelines. This is called easing back to normality.

What I don't understand is the idiocy some businesses have applied to themselves while trying to reopen. Case in point is barbershops and hair salons. Most of them around here only allow one customer at a time and by appointment. Are you cutting hair in a closet? The hair salon that I go to has four stylists available with plenty of room to practice distancing but they are only allowing one person at a time. If that person is a woman it could take over an hour before someone else gets in. Even the regular barbershops usually have more than one person cutting hair and it takes maybe ten minutes to cut a man's hair. Yeah, I know you have to sanitize the chair after each customer but there are bigger issues if somehow the seat of my pants is carrying the virus. Must remember to stay away from coughing dwarfs.

In the end maybe it is one party but that party is doing what Government was meant to do...Let the people use their God given common sense to make their own decisions in Life with minimal guidance or interference.

Doctors where my wife works think masks are good but WAY overrated. If you walk through a mist where someone immediately coughed or sneezed you probably wouldn't inhale the virus because it's dropping instantly being heavier than air and your nostrils are pointed downward. It would however hit your eyes and get in your system so you need to be wearing goggles even more importantly. Washing your hands and constantly spraying them with alcohol when out and about and spraying anything you buy when at a store is probably more effective than a mask also.

The Year of the Covid will be remembered.
Not only for the terrible death toll, but also for how we dealt with it.
I hope It doesn't sound indifferent but I believe a little well placed humor helps.

I saw an interesting article the other day. It seems that the latest in women's summer beach fashion is a thing called a Trikini. Its basically just a regular Bikini, but it comes with a matching face mask.
I kid you not. This is for real.

When I picked my wife up at the hospital yesterday I struck up a conversation with the nurse who was screening people as they entered. She was wearing a mask, face shield, and a protective gown along with another nurse wearing the same outfit. I said I was surprised at how many people I see in places like Walmart and Sam's not wearing masks. Both of them said they never wear masks when they go out in public at places like that but practice social distancing instead. I was really surprised when they both said that.

That's amazing. Our big city Walmarts around here are giant Covid virus petri dishes. Several have had to be shut down to be deep cleaned due to a very high incidence of Covid among the employees, including at least one death so far.

I've stopped going to Walmarts altogether until this craziness is over. Social distancing in the Walmart I used to shop at for my elderly mother is impossible. Hell, I'm lucky I don't come out of there dead of knife or gunshot wounds. :(

Since I am quite literally the poster child for Covid susceptibility, I have to be extra careful everywhere I go. :(

Did u hear about the new bathing suits, the trikini its a bikini with a face mask, Im not kidding.

I have read and reflected on this thread. My thoughts turned to my Grandfather who served in WWI, he was wounded by machine gun fire, a gas attack and shrapnel from an ordinance attack that caused problems his whole life, but he did live into his eighties and I was blessed to have that time to love him.

I also think of my Father who served in WW2, survived a plane crash during the War and lived not long enough and died in his 70's.

I have wondered if they were alive today would they be angry, sad or terribly disappointed by people actually being infuriated by being asked to wear a piece of cloth over their faces to protect their fellow citizens? I suspect all three.

We are not being asked to climb out of the trenches and go over the barbed wire in virtual suicide attacks in WWl. We are not being asked to storm the beaches of Normandy or liberate Iwo Jima. We are being asked to wear a mask to protect our fellow citizens. In comparison to our parents and grandparents it sure seems a very minor sacrifice to me, one I will gladly make! I am not a veteran but it is my opportunity to save a few of my fellow citizens if I am infected, an opportunity I gladly accept.

As a 35 year Firefighter/Paramedic my opinions are tempered by that experience. I worked through the Aids, Swine Flu, Bird Flu, H1N1 and Anthrax issues and probably more I don't recall. I also frequently responded to a nursing home where many residents suffered from MERS and or C-Diff so I did not hesitate to wear a mask, gloves and gown to protect myself and not bring it back to the station or to my family as I felt it was my obligation.

I went through chemotherapy I often wore a mask and visitors to my home were required to wear a mask before entering. Perhaps I am more accustomed to wearing a mask.

This is not an intellectual or political excercise to me, but rather based upon my personal experience and is perhaps why I am so passionate about it.

I'm not responsible for anyone but myself.A healthy person wears a face mask to protect themselves from those that are infected. If you are infected and know it then maybe you should just stay home. A quarantine is for sick people...not healthy ones. That's what gets everyone riled up.

You have that quite backwards, a person wears a mask to protect others from you because you may be infected and asymptomatic.

The good news is that preventing transmission to others through egress is relatively easy. It's like stopping gushing water from a hose right at the source, by turning off the faucet, compared with the difficulty of trying to catch all the drops of water after we've pointed the hose up and they've flown everywhere. Research shows that even a cotton mask dramatically reduces the number of virus particles emitted from our mouths—by as much as 99 percent. This reduction provides two huge benefits. Fewer virus particles mean that people have a better chance of avoiding infection, and if they are infected, the lower viral-exposure load may give them a better chance of contracting only a mild illness.

You're right. People who combine "me only" thinking with not being able or willing to understand how the virus and measures to slow its transmission work, do get riled up when asked to do something to help.

We're responsible for each other. Face masks help slow transmission both ways. Quarantines are for more than the obviously sick, when you can be infected and infect others without knowing.
