Wearing a face mask...

Jeff Cooper & masks

So, I try to stay out of these kind of threads because it is very easy to be misunderstood. Starting today I will be wearing a mask at least 75% of the time I am outside. I do not want to, but I will do it for my neighbors and community many of who (obviously) want me to comply.

Re: masks. Many, many years ago I read Cooper's quote regarding masks. My memory was that he said shoot anyone who is wearing a mask, regardless of the "side". I took that to heart and it added to my mask wearing reluctance. I checked on the quote and he really said just shoot anyone who is wearing a mask AND carrying a gun. What a relief, masks away while outside for me starting today!:)

I wrote a response on page 2 that addresses the actual legal standard, and I do that kind of stuff for a living as a government lawyer. While I do not have the depth of knowledge of my colleague who advises the Public Health Department, I have been working with her on some of her stuff and the associated enforcement issues (most of my client agencies are in the criminal justice system). The legal issues have largely been resolved, and were resolved over a century ago. This is not new stuff.

The medical knowledge is a moving target, evolving almost daily, and that drives the train in terms of what is recommended to the people who actually develop the policies allowed under emergency management. Go read what hsguy said about his background and experience. People like him do not pull their positions out of their waste ejection port. They pull it out of hard earned knowledge. We too have to live by the positions we advocate, and we don't enjoy it any more than anyone else.

While there are those who claim that their rights are being impinged, only rarely is that correct. (I've seen a couple reports of things that are in fact head scratchingly stupid - but verifiable stuff is rare.) There are time manner and place limitations that can be imposed on first amendment protections, for example.

I rarely if ever opine on ... chemistry, or nuclear physics, or other things that are out of my knowledge set/lane. What I see mostly is people so far out of their lanes that they have driven into the field on the far side of the frontage road. They have neither the medical nor legal knowledge to support their views. They are entitled to them - but that doesn't mean they are qualified or correct.
